Carry-on Baggage Allowance
Passengers flying with LAM - Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique are provided with a hand luggage allowance designed to ensure safety and convenience during the flight. Generally, travelers in Economy Class are permitted to carry one piece of cabin baggage with a maximum weight of 7 kg. Those traveling in Business Class may be entitled to a slightly more generous allowance, depending on the specific aircraft and route. The dimensions of the carry-on bag should typically not exceed 115 cm (the sum of length + width + height), ensuring it fits easily in the overhead compartments.
In addition to the primary carry-on bag, passengers may usually bring one small personal item, such as a handbag, laptop case, or briefcase, which must fit securely under the seat in front of them. Travelers should be aware that on smaller aircraft often used for regional connections, such as the Bombardier Q400 or Embraer jets, overhead storage space is limited. In such instances, the weight limit may be restricted to 5 kg, and larger carry-on items might need to be tagged and stowed in the hold as "Valet Baggage" right before boarding.
Checked Baggage Limits
LAM's checked baggage policy varies significantly depending on the route and fare class, with a distinction between the weight concept and the piece concept. For the majority of domestic and regional flights, the allowance is based on the weight concept. Under this rule, Economy Class passengers are typically allowed to check in luggage with a total combined weight of up to 20 kg. Passengers flying in Business Class generally enjoy a higher allowance of up to 30 kg.
However, for specific international routes (such as intercontinental flights), the airline may apply the piece concept. In these cases, the allowance might include two pieces of luggage, often up to 23 kg each for Economy Class, though this is strictly dependent on the destination and ticket type. Because these rules can vary, it is critical to check the specific baggage allowance indicated on your ticket or e-booking confirmation to avoid surprises at the airport.
Excess Baggage and Fees
If your luggage exceeds the free allowance specified on your ticket, excess baggage fees will apply. Since most domestic and regional routes operate on a weight concept, these charges are typically calculated per kilogram of excess weight. On routes where the piece concept applies, fees are generally charged per additional bag or for overweight individual pieces. It is highly recommended to purchase extra baggage allowance in advance through LAM’s offices or authorized agents, as rates paid at the airport check-in counters are usually higher. For safety reasons, any single piece of luggage weighing more than 32 kg is generally not accepted and must be transported as cargo.
Special Items: Sports Equipment and Instruments
Travelers planning to transport sports equipment—such as golf clubs, diving gear, or surfboards—or large musical instruments should declare these items during the booking process. While smaller items might be counted towards your standard weight allowance, larger or heavier equipment is often subject to a specific handling fee. Musical instruments that are small enough to fit in the overhead bin may be carried as hand luggage, whereas larger instruments, such as cellos, may require the purchase of an extra seat or must be checked as fragile baggage in a suitable hard-shell case.
Restricted and Prohibited Items
Strict safety regulations govern what can be carried on board. Lithium batteries, power banks, and spare batteries for electronic devices must be packed in your carry-on luggage only and are strictly prohibited in checked bags to prevent fire hazards. The cabin is also a restricted zone for sharp objects, tools, and flammable materials. Liquids, gels, and aerosols in hand luggage must adhere to the 100ml rule, stored in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag. Hazardous materials such as explosives, compressed gases, and flammable liquids are banned from all luggage types.
Tips for Efficient Packing
To ensure a smooth journey, weigh your bags at home before leaving for the airport to stay within your assigned limit, whether it is 20 kg or 30 kg. Use soft-sided luggage if possible, as it is easier to stow in tighter spaces, and always label your bags clearly with your contact details. Keep essential items like medication, travel documents, and valuables in your personal hand luggage so they remain with you at all times. If your itinerary involves a mix of international and domestic flights, pack according to the most restrictive baggage rule to avoid potential excess fees.
