About the Station

Wien Mitte Station is one of Austria's most vibrant and modern transport hubs, located just a few minutes' walk from the historic centre of Vienna and the Stadtpark city park. This station serves as the key departure point for the high-speed City Airport Train (CAT), which connects the city centre to the airport in just 16 minutes. The complex is integrated with "The Mall," a major shopping centre, making it a convenient destination not only for travel but also for shopping.

It is important for passengers to know that the railway platform is named Wien Mitte, while the connected metro station is called Landstraße. Navigation within the complex is simple: follow the green signs for the CAT terminal or the blue S-Bahn signs for suburban trains. Entrances are located on both Landstraßer Hauptstraße and Marxergasse.

By Foot: From St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansplatz), you can walk there in approximately 10–15 minutes by heading down Wollzeile street, and then through the park or along the main road.

Services and Amenities

Wien Mitte station offers passengers premium-class service, particularly within the CAT terminal.

One of the premier services is the City Check-In: passengers flying with many airlines can check in for their flight, print boarding passes, and drop off their luggage right at the station (usually from 24 hours up to 75 minutes before departure). This allows you to free your hands and enjoy a walk around Vienna before your flight.

Other amenities include:

Where to Eat

Since the station is connected to The Mall shopping centre, finding dining options here is effortless.

Quick Snacks and Coffee: On the ground floor and in the passageways, there are numerous bakeries (such as Anker, Ströck, DerMann) where you can grab a fresh croissant and coffee to go. The average cost is 5–7 Euros.

Full Meals: On the upper level, there is a food court featuring fast-food restaurants (McDonald’s, KFC) and outlets serving Asian, Italian, and Austrian cuisine. For those wishing to purchase groceries for their journey, a large Interspar supermarket is available (open until 20:00 or 21:00, except Sundays).

Station History

The history of this location began back in 1859 with the opening of the Hauptzollamt (Main Customs Office) station, which was a vital part of Vienna's connecting railway. For a long time, the station served as a modest transport node until it became a central point for the city S-Bahn network in 1962.

Wien Mitte acquired its modern appearance in the early 21st century. A massive reconstruction, lasting several years, transformed the old station into a futuristic multi-functional complex. The new station, along with the shopping centre, was grandly opened in 2012–2013. Today, it is not just a transport hub but a significant urban element linking the historic centre with the Landstraße district.

Passenger Tips

Choosing a Train to the Airport: You have two options. The CAT offers comfort, speed (16 minutes non-stop), and the ability to check in luggage in the city, but the ticket is more expensive (around 14–15 Euros). The S-Bahn S7 train follows the same route but makes all stops (taking about 25 minutes) and costs significantly less (around 4.40 Euros). If you are not in a rush, the S7 is an excellent way to save money.

Tickets: Buy CAT tickets online in advance—this is often cheaper than using the vending machines. Tickets for Vienna public transport (Wiener Linien) are also valid on the S-Bahn up to the city limits.

Safety: The station is safe and well-guarded; however, in dense crowds, always keep an eye on your personal belongings.

Overnight Stays: Please note that the station closes at night (approximately from 01:00 to 04:30), so it is not possible to stay inside overnight.
