About

Majestic minarets reaching for the sky and domes gleaming in the sun make the Heydar Mosque one of the most recognizable landmarks of modern Baku. The building's facade is clad in a special beige stone, decorated with intricate carvings and oriental ornaments, giving the complex a noble and timeless appearance. Four minarets, each 95 meters tall, and a cascade of domes, the main one reaching 55 meters, form an impressive silhouette against the city skyline. Azerbaijan is rightfully proud of this architectural monument, which has become a symbol of peace and spirituality.

The interior of the mosque is equally impressive: the walls and vaults are adorned with calligraphic verses from the Quran, delicate wood carvings, and stone shebeke screens. The 12,000 m² area surrounding the temple is beautifully landscaped with fountains and relaxation zones, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and harmony away from the city's hustle and bustle.

What to Do

A visit to the mosque offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in an atmosphere of peace and contemplation. Once in the main prayer hall, be sure to pay attention to the calligraphic paintings and the most complex geometric patterns decorating the inner surfaces of the domes. The craftsmanship of modern stone carvers, embodied in the interior details, turns a visit into a true journey through the world of Islamic art.

On the spacious surrounding grounds, visitors can enjoy walks by cool fountains and view numerous decorative sculptures. This location is excellent for a family visit, providing comfortable rest areas. For photography enthusiasts, the mosque will be a true inspiration: thanks to its unique lighting system, the building looks different depending on the time of day, creating stunning visual effects at sunset and during the night hours.

Furthermore, here you can learn about the principles of tolerance for which the region is famous: the mosque is open to believers of different denominations, making it an important center for spiritual unity. A walk alongside the high minarets will allow you to appreciate the engineering genius of the builders and feel the monumentality of this modern temple complex.

History & Facts

The history of this grand structure began relatively recently — in mid-2012, by order of President Ilham Aliyev. Construction work started in September of that year and proceeded at an impressive pace under strict state supervision. The entire complex was completed in record time, and its grand opening took place in December 2014.

The architect Adalat Mammadov, who designed the mosque, masterfully blended classical motifs of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school with advanced engineering solutions. In 2023, the building officially received the status of an architectural monument. Particular attention during construction was paid to safety: the complex geology of the area and regional seismic activity required the creation of a unique rock foundation and the use of reinforced concrete frames for the minarets.

Erected in memory of Heydar Aliyev, the mosque has become more than just a religious site; it is a symbol of national unity. It is open to representatives of various branches of Islam, highlighting the country's commitment to the principles of multiculturalism and tolerance. Today, it stands as a key example of modern sacred architecture, celebrating the stone-carving traditions of this ancient region.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the scale and exquisite architecture, an average tourist will need about 1.5–2 hours. This is plenty of time for a leisurely stroll through the surrounding grounds, admiring the majestic facades, and viewing the interior decor of the main hall.

If you plan to visit in the evening, it is worth allowing an extra 30 minutes to wait for the lighting to turn on. The light effects on the domes and minarets create a completely different, fairytale-like atmosphere that is perfect for artistic photography.
