Weather Overview

The climate of Araxá can be described as tropical highland, making it quite comfortable for travellers. Due to its elevated location, the sweltering heat common to many other regions of Brazil is rare here. In general, the weather is moderate and pleasant, with stable temperatures that rarely drop below comfortable levels or rise to extreme highs.

Two distinct seasons stand out during the year, differing mainly in the amount of rainfall. The wet season lasts from October to March: this is when the majority of the annual rainfall occurs, and nature becomes particularly lush and green. The rainiest months are December and January, when precipitation falls on more than 20 days per month. Temperatures during this period hover around +22...+24°C, creating a warm but humid atmosphere.

The dry season, coinciding with the Brazilian winter, falls between May and August. This time is ideal for those who prefer clear skies: the rains practically cease (in July, there is often not a single rainy day), and the air becomes drier. The days remain sunny and warm, but the nights bring a noticeable freshness—temperatures can drop to +12...+14°C, so it is worth taking a light jacket for evening walks.

Temperature

Araxá delights travellers with a mild and comfortable climate, allowing for trips at almost any time of the year. The highest daytime temperatures are usually recorded at the beginning of the Brazilian spring, in September and October, when the thermometer can reach 29-30°C. The summer months (December to February) also remain warm and humid with stable daytime readings of around 27°C, creating excellent conditions for relaxation if you do not mind tropical rains.

The winter period, which lasts from June to August in the Southern Hemisphere, brings noticeable freshness and is the driest time of the year. July is considered the coldest month: the average temperature holds at 18-19°C. At this time of year, the weather is most stable, the days are sunny and clear, and the air warms up to a comfortable 24-25°C, which is ideal for excursions and active tourism without exhausting heat.

When planning your wardrobe, it is worth considering daily temperature fluctuations, which are particularly pronounced during the winter season. The difference between daytime warmth and night-time cool can be more than 10 degrees: after sunset, the temperature often drops to 12-13°C, so a light jacket or jumper will be indispensable in the evenings. In summer, this contrast is smoothed out, and nights remain quite warm, with temperatures around 19°C.

Precipitation

The climate in Araxá is characterised by a clear division into wet and dry seasons, which is typical for this region of Brazil. The main rainy period occurs during the warm season, starting in October and continuing until roughly March. During these months, precipitation falls regularly, filling the rivers and sustaining the lush tropical vegetation around the city.

The rainiest time is considered to be the Southern Hemisphere summer. The peak frequency of precipitation falls in December and February, when the number of rainy days can reach 23–24 per month. January and November are also notable for high humidity. Tourists planning a visit during this period should be prepared for frequent, though often short-lived, downpours and should definitely carry an umbrella or raincoat.

With the arrival of May, the weather changes, and a distinct dry season sets in, lasting until the end of August. This time of year is distinguished by minimal rainfall. July and June are the driest months: in July, statistically, there may be no rainy days at all. This is the ideal period for those who prefer stable, clear weather for walks and excursions.

What to Pack

When packing for a trip to Araxá, it is important to consider the seasonality of the local climate. From October to March, there is a warm but rainy period: during this time, you will need light clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Since rains can be frequent and heavy, be sure to bring a reliable umbrella, a light raincoat, and waterproof shoes to feel comfortable during your walks.

If your trip is planned for the period from May to August, be prepared for drier and cooler weather. During the day, the temperature remains comfortable, but nights can be quite fresh when the thermometer drops to +12°C. In this season, it is best to use the principle of layering: a t-shirt is sufficient for the day, but for evening outings, you should grab a jumper, cardigan, or light jacket. Moisturising cream will also be useful, as humidity noticeably decreases during these months.

Regardless of the time of year, pack comfortable flat shoes for long walking tours across the region's hilly terrain. Additionally, Araxá is famous for its thermal springs and spa complexes, so a swimming costume and flip-flops will be essential items in your luggage, allowing you to enjoy the healing waters in any weather.
