The sanctuary is designed in a Neoclassical style with eclectic elements and is striking in its splendor. Its construction began in 1909 on the site where, according to legend, the statuette of the Virgin Mary was found. The grand facade, marble columns, 53 exquisite French stained glass windows, and rich interior decoration with Italian mosaics create an atmosphere of solemnity and peace. The architectural design was inspired by the famous Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.
The basilica is not only a place for worship but also the heart of Brazil's largest religious festival — Círio de Nazaré. Every October, millions of believers participate in a massive procession during which the statue of Our Lady of Nazareth is carried from the Cathedral to the basilica. This event makes the sanctuary particularly significant for the cultural and spiritual life of the entire Amazon region.
