Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Conceição e São José

About

The Parish of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph is not just a religious building, but the heart of the historical heritage that the city of Montes Claros is proud of. As the oldest church in the district, this temple (known to locals as Igreja Matriz) has been the community's primary spiritual landmark for over two centuries.

Located on the picturesque Praça Dr. Chaves, the church is a classic example of religious architecture featuring two majestic bell towers. The facade, finished in white and ochre, gives the building a recognizable colonial look that is so characteristic of old Brazil.

Inside the temple, an atmosphere of peace prevails, and the sacristy carefully preserves valuable wooden statues of the patrons—Our Lady of the Conception and Saint Joseph. This is a must-visit spot for those who want to touch the origins of the city's culture and see the monument where the history of the local parish began.

What to Do

A visit to the Parish of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph offers guests a chance to experience the living traditions of the Minas Gerais region. One of the top recommendations for tourists is to attend the daily services. Being present at mass allows you not only to see the interior decor but also to experience the temple's special acoustics and the sincere devotion of the locals.

Special attention should be paid to the architectural details of the facade: take a close look at the decorative elements, the elegant arched openings, and the symmetrical bell towers. It is a wonderful spot for photography lovers, especially during hours when the sunlight highlights the building's ochre tones.

If your trip coincides with important dates, you might witness grand cultural and religious festivals held right in the square in front of the church. History & Facts

The history of this spiritual center began in 1769, when a devout landowner named José Lopes de Carvalho decided to build a small chapel right in front of his house. In those days, the first structure was quite modest, measuring only 50 meters wide, and served as a place of prayer for his family and close associates.

The shrine received official parish status on July 14, 1832, although full church life only began there three years later with the arrival of the first priest, Father Antônio Gonçalves Chaves. It was in his honor that the square where the church stands was later named. Its status as the city's oldest church was officially recognized in the summer of 1857.

Over many decades, the building's appearance has changed significantly. A dramatic transformation occurred in the 1940s when the original colonial style was almost completely redesigned. Subsequent renovations in 1999 moved the building's appearance even further from its historical roots. Today, the only authentic element remaining from the original design is the central entrance door with its characteristic arched vault.

For a typical introductory visit to the Parish of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph, 30–45 minutes is usually sufficient. This is plenty of time to admire the building's facade, explore the interior details, and take souvenir photos at Praça Dr. Chaves.
