House of Glória

About

Casa da Glória is one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of the city of Diamantina in sunny Brazil. This outstanding historical complex consists of two mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries that literally "hover" over the cobbled street thanks to their famous architectural element.

The main feature of the landmark is the elegant wooden suspension bridge, Passadiço da Glória, which connects the two buildings. This passage has become an icon of colonial style and played a key role in the campaign for the city's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, the complex houses the Institute of Geosciences of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

A visit to this place allows you to touch the rich history of the state of Minas Gerais and witness the evolution of urban development: from the residential home of a wealthy townswoman to an important scientific center. Thanks to its high rating and picturesque views, Casa da Glória is considered a must-see on any tourist itinerary through the region.

What to Do

A walk to Casa da Glória is a true journey through time. The first thing worth doing is admiring the unique Passadiço da Glória. This elegant wooden bridge over the road is the perfect backdrop for photos, especially if you shoot it from Rua da Glória, where it is most harmoniously integrated into the urban landscape.

Inside the complex, visitors will find fascinating exhibitions from the Institute of Geosciences. Here you can learn about the history of diamond mining, see rich collections of minerals, and learn about the work of the German naturalist Wilhelm von Eschwege. These exhibitions provide a deeper understanding of Brazil's scientific and industrial past.

Don't miss the chance to hear stories about the legendary nuns who once used the covered passage to isolate their students from the outside bustle. Even if the site is partially closed for restoration at the time of your visit, walking around it and examining the details of the colonial architecture will be a great start to your tour of Diamantina's monuments.

Getting There

The attraction is located in the heart of the historic center. If you are already in Diamantina, the easiest way to reach Casa da Glória is on foot — it is just a few minutes' walk from Praça da Sé. The compact nature of the center makes it easy to combine a visit here with other architectural monuments.

Travelers arriving from Belo Horizonte (a distance of about 240 km) can use regular bus services operated by Viação Sandra or Pássaro Verde. The trip takes an average of 4–5 hours. For those who prefer the freedom of movement, the drive in a rental car follows roads BR-451 and MG-010.

If your journey starts from Belo Horizonte Airport (CNF), you will first need to get to the city itself by taxi or transfer bus, and then transfer to intercity transport. Within Diamantina, taxi and Uber services are also available, though a stroll through the ancient cobbled streets is much more enjoyable.

History & Facts

The history of this site began at the end of the 18th century when the first of the two mansions was built. Presumably, the house was constructed around 1775 for Josefa Maria da Glória. Later, the building became the property of the Royal Treasury and served as a residence for the intendants of the Diamond District, including the famous naturalist Intendente Câmara, a pioneer of metallurgy in the region.

In the mid-19th century, the complex was acquired by the church and became a girls' college run by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. It was the nuns who initiated the construction of the legendary passadiço (enclosed bridge) at the end of the 19th century. It is believed the covered bridge was created so that students could move between the buildings without going out onto the public street, thus maintaining their vow of seclusion.

In 1979, Casa da Glória became part of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Since then, it has transformed into an important scientific and educational center while preserving its status as one of the most significant monuments of colonial architecture. Over time, the Passadiço became more than just a functional element, turning into a true emblem of the city and a symbol of its historical authenticity.

Time Needed

For a quick introduction to the landmark, viewing the facades, and taking memorable photos against the backdrop of the famous wooden bridge, you will need about 30–45 minutes. This time is sufficient if you plan to view the site as part of a general walk through the historic center.

If you intend to go inside to explore the Institute of Geosciences' exhibits and learn more about the building's history and the region's geology, you should set aside 1 to 1.5 hours for the visit. This immersion will allow you to slowly enjoy the atmosphere of the old mansion and the unique mineral collections.

Working Hours

Typically, the Casa da Glória complex is open to visitors Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 18:00. On Sundays, the attraction is generally closed to the public.

Please note that the site may currently be temporarily closed for restoration to prepare updated exhibits. Before planning your visit, it is highly recommended to check the current information on the official website of the UFMG Institute of Geosciences.
