General Weather Conditions

The climate in São Luís is typically tropical, characterised by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. Temperature fluctuations here are minimal: average figures remain steadily in the range of 26°C to 28°C. This means that travellers can expect truly hot weather at any time, allowing for enjoyment of water activities and walks.

The year in São Luís is distinctly divided into two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy period lasts approximately from January to June. During these months, rainfall and cloudy days increase significantly, reaching a peak in March and April when it may rain almost daily. Despite the frequent downpours, air temperature remains invariably high.

From July to December, the dry season sets in, which many tourists consider the best time to visit the city. Rainfall decreases sharply, especially between August and October, giving way to sunny and clear days. This time creates ideal conditions for exploring the historic streets of São Luís and relaxing on nearby beaches without fear of sudden tropical rain.

Temperature

The climate in São Luís is distinguished by high and surprisingly stable temperatures throughout the year, which is characteristic of the equatorial belt. Annual fluctuations in average temperatures are minimal and lie within a very narrow range — from 26.5°C in March to 28.5°C in October. This means the city practically lacks the division into cold and hot seasons familiar to many tourists. The weather here is always warm, and the difference between months is more evident in humidity levels and rainfall amounts than in air temperature.

The hottest period in São Luís falls in the second half of the year, from August to December. Peak values are observed in September and October, when the average daytime temperature reaches 30.9°C, whilst the night-time temperature remains at 26°C. The "coolest" months are considered to be February and March, coinciding with the peak of the rainy season. At this time, the average temperature drops slightly to 26.5-26.7°C, but the weather still remains very warm and humid.

An important feature of the local climate is the small difference between day and night temperatures, which rarely exceeds 4-5 degrees. Nights here are just as warm and sultry as the days. Minimum temperatures throughout the year consistently stay above 24°C. Travellers planning a trip to São Luís should prepare for constantly hot weather, regardless of the chosen month.

Precipitation

The wet season in São Luís is characterised by peak rainfall in March and April, when rains can occur almost daily. During this period, covering the first half of the year, travellers should be prepared for high humidity and frequent, sometimes heavy tropical downpours. For instance, in March, the rainiest month, precipitation is observed nearly every day.

Starting from July, the amount of rain noticeably decreases, giving way to the dry season. The driest months are considered August, September, and October, when rainfall becomes a great rarity. September is the absolute leader in the number of sunny days; on average, there are only about 4 days with precipitation in this month. This time is ideal for those who wish to enjoy city walks and beach holidays without the fear of getting caught in the rain.

Transitional months show a gradual change in weather conditions. In June and July, rainfall begins to decline, and towards the end of the year, in November and December, the number of rainy days starts to grow again, heralding the arrival of a new wet season. Given the year-round high temperatures, all precipitation in São Luís falls exclusively as rain.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to São Luís, it is worth considering its hot and humid tropical climate. Temperatures here are consistently high throughout the year, so the foundation of your wardrobe should consist of light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Regardless of the season, be sure to take high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect against the intense sun. Considering that you will be walking a lot around the historic centre with its cobbled streets, comfortable footwear, such as sandals or light trainers, will become your best companion.

The climate in São Luís has two clearly defined seasons, which directly affects the choice of items. The rainy season lasts approximately from January to June. During this period, rainfall is very frequent, so it is worth packing a light waterproof raincoat or poncho in your suitcase. An umbrella might be less practical due to potential wind. Quick-drying items and, perhaps, a spare pair of shoes that do not mind moisture will also come in handy. Despite the rains, the weather remains hot and sultry.

The dry season, continuing roughly from July to December, is characterised by minimal rainfall and a large number of sunny days. This is the ideal time for walks and relaxing on the beach. During this period, sun protection is especially important. Although evenings remain warm, a light long-sleeved shirt or a wrap may be useful for protection against evening coolness or air conditioning indoors. The principle of layering here lies in having the ability to quickly throw on something light for protection against the sun or rain depending on the season.
