What to Do

The main activity here is immersing yourself in the world of contemporary Cambodian art. You can move freely between the gallery's three floors, exploring rotating exhibitions and the permanent collection. Each work tells its own story, whether it's abstract canvases or detailed sculptures by artists such as Hour Seyha or Bor Hak. Sometimes visitors are lucky enough to meet the artists themselves, who personally open the gallery and are happy to answer questions about their work.

After strolling through the halls, be sure to head up to the rooftop cafe. It’s an ideal place to relax in the shade of the plants and enjoy the light breeze. The menu features refreshing drinks, snacks, and vegan and vegetarian options, such as fresh spring rolls. If you enjoy watching traditional crafts, look out for the weaving loom, where traditional cotton products are created right before your eyes.

For those who want to take a piece of Cambodia home, the art space allows you to purchase your favorite works or small handmade souvenirs. The peaceful setting with fast Wi-Fi also makes this a suitable place for creative people who need to work for a few hours in a unique, inspiring atmosphere.

Getting There

Getting to this creative corner is easy, as Romcheik 5 Art Space & Café is located on the east bank of the river in a quiet neighborhood, just 1.7 km from the center of Battambang. The most popular and convenient way to get around here is by tuk-tuk or motor taxi (remork). A ride from the city center will cost approximately 2–5 USD, depending on your bargaining skills.

For those who prefer total freedom of movement, renting a bicycle or scooter is an excellent option. The roads in this part of the city are relatively quiet, making for a pleasant self-guided ride. If you enjoy walking, the route from the center takes about 20–30 minutes—a great opportunity to observe local daily life away from the main tourist paths.

If you are arriving from other regions, such as Phnom Penh, the bus journey takes about 4–6 hours. Upon arrival at the bus station, it is best to take a taxi or tuk-tuk and provide the address Street 201A. As a landmark for the driver, you can mention the river—the art space is located very close to the riverbank.

History & Facts

The story of this place began in 2012 when four talented young artists—Bor Hak, Hour Seyha, Nget Chanpenh, and Mil Chankrin—decided to create a space for self-expression. They are all graduates of the famous Phare Ponleu Selpak art school, which helped them find their path in life. With the support of a French patron, they transformed a former factory building in a quiet part of town into a creative workshop and gallery.

The name "Romcheik 5" is no coincidence—it shares the name of the local district, emphasizing the creators' connection to their roots and community. What started as a modest studio eventually transformed into a full-fledged art center. By 2018, the space expanded to the status of a museum with a permanent collection, a significant event for the region's cultural life, where contemporary art collections are rare.

Today, the Romcheik 5 collective is active on the international art scene, exhibiting and selling their work abroad. Their art is deeply personal and often reflects the complex periods of the country's history through the lens of expressionism and abstraction. It is not just a gallery, but a living testament to how art can revitalize culture and inspire a new generation of Cambodian creators.

Time Needed

To leisurely browse all the exhibits and soak in the atmosphere, most visitors need between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. This is plenty of time to thoughtfully explore the three floors of the gallery, which showcase the works of local artists, and form your own impression of the region's contemporary art.

Usually, about an hour is spent in the art space itself, while the remaining time is perfect for relaxing at the rooftop cafe. Here, you can have a coffee or a snack while enjoying a panoramic view of the city. If you plan to watch the traditional krama weaving process or chat with the staff about the painting techniques, it’s worth budgeting a bit more time.
