Dongtan Beach

About

Amidst the bustling streets of a popular resort lies a corner of peace and comfort — Dongtan Beach. This coastline, stretching for about one kilometer, is nestled between lively Jomtien and Pratumnak Hill. Here, in the city of Pattaya, tourists find a rare combination of clean sand, well-kept grounds, and a serene atmosphere.

One of the main highlights of this place is the shady palm and casuarina alleys that stretch along the entire coast of Thailand. A straight sandy strip up to 40 meters wide allows both lovers of sunbeds under umbrellas and those who prefer privacy in the more "wild" part of the beach near the water park to settle in comfortably. The absence of large rocks on the bottom and calm water during the high season make it an excellent choice for family vacations.

Dongtan is considered a more upscale and quiet extension of Jomtien. Thanks to the proximity of high-end hotels and condominiums, the beach is kept in perfect order. It is not just a place for swimming, but a picturesque walking area where the sound of the Gulf of Thailand's waves isn't drowned out by loud music or crowds of passersby.

What to Do

On the Dongtan coast, everyone will find something to their liking. Classic beach holiday enthusiasts can rent a sunbed at one of the coastal clubs, for example, at Sunny Beach No.14 (rental costs about 100 THB), or simply relax on a mat in the shade of the trees. An open-air massage is another pleasure available here: experienced practitioners offer their services right on the shore for a very reasonable fee.

For those who prefer active pastimes, water activities are available: windsurfing and SUP board rentals, banana boat rides, or jet skis. Team sports enthusiasts often gather at the beach volleyball court, and in the evenings, a street fitness area opens near the parking lot. The main magnet for families remains Pattaya Park with its water slides and famous tower, from where you can make an extreme zipline descent straight to the sea.

Walks along the water's edge are especially beautiful at sunset. The shore offers stunning views of nearby islands and city skyscrapers. And if you get hungry, local vendors are always ready to offer fresh tropical fruits, classic Tom Yum, or other Thai dishes that can be enjoyed without straying far from your sun lounger.

Getting There

Getting to this picturesque spot from central Pattaya is quite easy. A trip south via Thappraya Road will take about 10–15 minutes (a distance of approximately 5 km). If you are already on Jomtien Beach, simply head north along Beach Road past the police station and the 7-Eleven store — where the road turns right, a pedestrian path along the sea begins, leading straight to Dongtan. From the Pratumnak area, it is most convenient to go down through Soi 5 and turn left.

The most popular public transport here is the blue songthaew pickup trucks (baht buses). You need to take the route heading towards Jomtien and get off at the intersection of Thappraya and First Beach Road. The cost of a taxi or motorbike taxi ride from the city center usually ranges between 100–200 THB. For those who have rented a bike or bicycle, there is a convenient path along the beach, and parking is provided at the beginning of the beach zone for cars.

Travelers arriving from Bangkok will need about two hours to reach Pattaya. Thanks to the developed urban infrastructure, you can always find necessary shops and hotels near the beach, making logistics as comfortable as possible.

History & Facts

The beach owes its melodic name to the local flora. The word "Dongtan" in Thai is associated with the trees (palms and casuarinas) that have historically grown along this coastline. This natural feature still sets it apart from other, more urbanized recreational areas.

In the past, this place was much less developed: the sand was not always perfectly clean, and convenient walking paths were non-existent. However, a large-scale renovation in recent years has transformed the territory into a modern recreation zone. Wide sidewalks appeared, and the work of municipal services to maintain cleanliness and safety was intensified, allowing the beach to earn a reputation as one of the most prestigious spots in the city.

Interestingly, for decades, Dongtan Beach has maintained its status as a "quiet haven." Unlike the central districts, only a few large hotels and condominiums have been built here (such as the famous Rabbit Resort), which prevents huge crowds of tourists. The presence of police posts and lifeguard towers makes it one of the safest swimming spots in the region.

Time Needed

To simply get a feel for the atmosphere and take a quick dip, 2 hours will be quite enough. However, most tourists prefer to stay here for half a day (about 4 hours) to leisurely stroll through the palm alleys and enjoy lunch overlooking the Gulf of Thailand.

If you plan to combine beach relaxation with a visit to the Pattaya Park water park or a walk to the nearby Pratumnak Hill, it's worth dedicating a whole day to this trip. Morning hours are best for active swimming, while the evening is perfect for watching sunsets and walking along the illuminated promenade.

Working Hours

Access to the coastline is open to everyone 24/7. You can come here at dawn for a morning jog or late in the evening to enjoy the sound of the surf in the moonlight.

Please note that beach infrastructure (sunbed rentals, cafes, and massage parlors) usually operates from early morning until sunset (approximately 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM). To get the most up-to-date information on events, we recommend checking the official pages of the coastal establishments.
