General Weather Overview

The climate in Temuco can be described as mild and temperate, with characteristics transitioning from a Mediterranean type to a humid oceanic climate, typical of southern Chile. There is no exhausting heat or extreme cold here, making the city accessible for visits all year round. However, travelers should take note of the distinct seasonality, especially the difference in rainfall between the summer and winter months.

Summer, which falls in the period from December to February in the Southern Hemisphere, is the most popular time for tourism. During these months, the weather is warm and dry: daytime temperatures comfortably stay around +22°C...+25°C, and rain is a rarity. This is the ideal time for long walks and exploring the natural beauty of the Araucanía region under clear skies.

With the arrival of winter (June–August), the picture changes: it becomes cool and damp. The average daytime temperature drops to +11°C, and nights can be quite cold, with temperatures around +3°C...+5°C. A characteristic feature of this season is the large number of rainy days — averaging 16 to 18 days per month, so an umbrella and waterproof clothing will become mandatory companions for a tourist during this period.

Temperature

The weather in Temuco is characterized by a comfortable and moderate climate, where the seasons clearly succeed one another. The warmest period is the Chilean summer, lasting from December to February. At this time, especially in January and February, the average daily temperature rises to a pleasant 24–25°C. This is an ideal time for walking, as the summer heat here is rarely exhausting, and rainfall is kept to a minimum.

The winter months, which fall in June, July, and August in the Southern Hemisphere, bring coolness and high humidity. July usually becomes the coldest month, when the average temperature drops to 7.1°C, and nighttime readings can fall to 3.3°C. Although severe frosts rarely happen, the high number of rainy days (up to 18 days in June) creates a feeling of dampness, so warm waterproof clothing will be absolutely necessary.

A distinctive feature of the local climate is the noticeable temperature fluctuations throughout the day. Even at the height of the summer season, when the air warms up to 24°C during the day, the nights remain quite fresh with temperatures around 10–11°C. Such a contrast requires tourists to approach their wardrobe wisely: when heading out for a walk on a sunny day, it is always worth having a sweater or a light jacket on hand for the evening.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Temuco is distributed unevenly throughout the year, forming distinct wet and dry seasons. If you are planning a trip, it is important to consider that the winter months (June to August) bring the highest number of cloudy days, while summer delights with stable and dry weather.

The peak of the rainy season falls in June, which is the wettest month of the year: precipitation falls on average for 18 days, and its level reaches the annual maximum. July and August also remain rainy, with precipitation observed approximately 16 days a month. During this period, travelers are recommended to carry a reliable raincoat and waterproof shoes, as rain is a frequent occurrence.

Conversely, the driest period lasts from December to February. January and February are distinguished by minimal rainfall (from 0 to 1 mm) and just three rainy days per month. This is the perfect time to visit the region if you want to avoid the rain and enjoy open-air walks. Spring and autumn serve as transitional periods with a moderate number of wet days.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for Temuco, the main rule should be the principle of layering. The weather here can be changeable: even in the warmest summer months (January and February), when the air warms up to a comfortable 24–25°C during the day, nights remain fresh with temperatures around 10–11°C. Therefore, in addition to light t-shirts and summer trousers, be sure to take a warm sweater, fleece top, or light jacket to feel cozy during evening walks.

If your trip is planned for the cool season (May to September), be prepared for frequent precipitation and lower temperatures. In the winter months (June–August), the number of rainy days reaches 16–18 per month, and the thermometer can drop to 3–5°C at night. At this time of year, a high-quality waterproof windbreaker with a hood, a raincoat, and waterproof shoes will become indispensable. An umbrella will also be useful, but due to possible wind, a reliable jacket often proves more practical.

Regardless of the time of year, put comfortable flat shoes in your luggage, ideally suited for long walking tours around the city and its surroundings. Do not forget about sun protection: Chile has high levels of ultraviolet radiation, so sunscreen, dark sunglasses, and a hat will be useful even in cloudy weather. A small city backpack will be a great addition for carrying water and extra layers of clothing if it gets hot during the day.
