Overview

The climate in Pucón is characterized as temperate, with distinct seasonality, making it attractive to tourists year-round depending on their travel goals. Summer here, lasting from December to February, is the most pleasant period: the weather is warm and comfortable, with average daytime temperatures reaching 20–22°C. This period sees minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and nature walks.

In contrast, the winter months (June to August) bring cool temperatures and high humidity. Daytime air temperatures rarely rise above 8°C, while at night they can drop to 1–3°C. A characteristic feature of winter in this region of Chile is frequent precipitation: the number of rainy days in June can reach 22, so travelers should make sure to pack warm and waterproof clothing in advance.

The shoulder seasons in Pucón — spring and autumn — are marked by gradual temperature changes and variable weather. While March still retains the warmth of the past summer, it becomes noticeably cooler and rainier by May. Overall, the city's climate is favorable for those who dislike exhausting heat, preferring mild summers and atmospheric, albeit wet, winters.

Temperature

The climate in Pucón is temperate and comfortable, with distinct seasons typical of the Southern Hemisphere. The peak of the heat is in January and February, when daytime temperatures reach a pleasant 20–22°C. This time is ideal for beach holidays by the lake and long walks, as exhausting heat is rare here. February is traditionally considered the warmest month, with an average of about 17.0°C.

In winter, which lasts from June to August, the picture changes significantly. The coldest month is July: the average temperature drops to 4.5°C, and nighttime values often approach 1.5°C. During the day, the air warms up to only 7–8°C, so you will need truly warm clothing for a trip during this period. Such coolness creates excellent conditions for winter sports on the slopes of the nearby volcano.

When planning a trip to this region of Chile, it is important to consider the daily temperature fluctuations, which change throughout the year. In summer, the amplitude is most noticeable, at about 10 degrees: a warm day is followed by a quite cool night. In winter, the difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum narrows to 5–6 degrees. In any case, the principle of layering clothes remains a top tip for a comfortable holiday.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Pucón is distributed unevenly throughout the year, showing the pronounced seasonality typical of this region of Chile. The year can be clearly divided into a drier summer period and a wet winter season. Travelers should keep in mind that even in the driest months, there is a chance of rain, but its intensity and frequency change dramatically depending on the season.

The wettest period occurs during the Southern Hemisphere's winter months — from May to August. The peak of bad weather is usually seen in June, which is the rainiest month: precipitation can occur for 22 days, bringing cool temperatures and high humidity. In July and August, rain is also frequent (about 19 days per month). Given the low temperatures during this season (averaging around 4–5°C), cold rain falls in the city, while snow falls on the highlands and slopes of the Villarrica volcano, marking the start of the ski season.

The most favorable time for those who prefer clear weather is summer, especially January and February. In these months, precipitation drops to a minimum (only 2–3 mm on average), and the number of days with any moisture decreases to 7–8. This is an ideal time for hiking and beach holidays on the lakes, as prolonged heavy rains are very rare during this period.

Packing Tips

Pucón is a hub for adventure tourism, so your wardrobe should be primarily functional and comfortable. In summer (January-February), when daytime temperatures warm up to a comfortable 20–22°C, T-shirts, light trousers, and shorts will come in handy. However, keep in mind that nights here can be chilly even at the peak of the season (around 10°C), so be sure to pack a fleece jacket or sweater. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat — the sun is very active at these latitudes.

If your trip falls during the winter period (June-August), be prepared for cool weather and high humidity. Average temperatures drop to 4–5°C, and it can rain for more than 20 days a month. Layering is critical this time of year: thermal underwear, a warm middle layer, and a high-quality waterproof jacket or raincoat. An umbrella may be useful in town, but for nature walks, it's better to choose moisture-wicking and waterproof clothing.

Regardless of the time of year, the main item in your kit should be reliable trekking shoes with a non-slip sole for walking on volcanic landscapes and through forests. Additionally, we highly recommend bringing swimwear: even in winter, you'll need it to visit the famous thermal springs near Pucón.
