To ensure your journey through Chaoyang Railway Station goes smoothly and without unnecessary stress, it is useful to learn about local rules and service features in advance. Although not a giant hub, this station has its own nuances characteristic of China's transport system.
Arrival Time and Security Check
The main rule for any Chinese railway station is do not be late. It is recommended to arrive at the station at least 45–60 minutes before your train departs. This time is necessary to pass two stages of control: checking the "health code" (if applicable) or tickets at the building entrance and a thorough luggage inspection. Note that security requirements here are strict: knives (even penknives), flammable items, and aerosols over 120 ml are prohibited. You may be asked to take a sip from open bottles of liquid.
Tickets and Boarding
China operates an electronic ticket system, so you most likely will not need a paper form. However, boarding has its own features for foreign citizens:
- Turnstiles with automatic ID card scanning often do not read foreign passports. Look for the passage marked Manual Channel or a booth with a staff member near the turnstiles.
- Boarding usually begins 15–20 minutes prior and closes strictly 3–5 minutes before departure. The doors to the platform close automatically, and it is impossible to persuade staff to let you through after this time.
- Always check the train number (e.g., D7409) and the colored indicator on the platform floor to find where your carriage stops.
Luggage
Since Chaoyang Station is a transit station, porter services are rarely found here. Be prepared to transport your luggage yourself using elevators and escalators. On high-speed trains, the free luggage allowance is usually 20 kg per person. Suitcases are placed on racks above the seats or in special compartments at the end of the carriage (for large items). Valuables and documents are best kept in a small bag with you.
Transfers
If Chaoyang is your transfer point, take into account that there may not be direct transfer corridors inside the "sterile zone" (depending on the current passenger flow scheme). In this case, you will have to exit through the arrival turnstiles and go through security again to enter. Allow at least 1–1.5 hours for the transfer to orient yourself, have a snack, and complete all formalities.
Overnight Waits
Chaoyang Station does not operate 24 hours a day. The building closes shortly after the arrival of the last train (around 23:00) and opens in the morning before the first trip (around 06:30). Staying overnight in the waiting hall is impossible — security will ask everyone to leave the premises. If you have a night transfer or an early departure, book a hotel in Gurao Town in advance, which is within walking distance or a 5-minute taxi ride away.
