Since Shijiazhuang Luancheng Airport (LCT) is a specialised general aviation airfield and not a standard passenger hub, advice for travellers here differs radically from usual recommendations. The main rule for any tourist heading here: clearly understand the purpose of your visit.
Most Important Advice: Check the Airport Code
Before planning your route, look at your ticket. If you are flying on a scheduled airline flight (e.g., Air China, Spring Airlines, or Hebei Airlines), you are NOT going to Luancheng. You need Shijiazhuang Zhengding Airport (code SJW). A navigation error could cost you a missed flight, as the distance between the airports is over 40 km.
Arrival Time Recommendations
There are no queues at check-in counters here, so the "arrive 3 hours early" rule does not apply. Arrival time depends on the event:
- For Airshow Visitors: It is recommended to arrive by the gate opening time (usually around 09:00 AM) or even 30–40 minutes before the start. This will allow you to take the best seats in the stands or by the airfield fence before the main crowd arrives and avoid traffic jams at the industrial park entrance.
- For Business Aviation Clients: If you are chartering a private jet, it is sufficient to arrive at the FBO centre 20–30 minutes before departure. This time is enough for a short briefing and completing formalities.
Check-in and Seat Selection Features
There are no self-service kiosks or online check-in at Luancheng.
- Seat Selection: If you are flying on a private board or sightseeing plane, seats are allocated by the pilot based on the aircraft's centre of gravity (weight distribution). Please follow the crew's instructions — this is a safety matter.
- Best Viewing Spots (For Spectators): At the airshow, the best views often open up not from the VIP stands, but from the edges of the spectator zone, closer to the taxiways where aircraft pass as close as possible to the public. Don't forget to bring binoculars.
Safety Rules and Hand Luggage
Security control at the entrance during mass events is strict.
- What is Prohibited: It is forbidden to bring lighters, matches, flammable liquids, and alcohol onto the air show territory. The use of professional drones without special accreditation is also frequently restricted so as not to interfere with flights.
- What is Allowed: You are allowed to bring water in plastic containers (you may be asked to take a sip at the entrance), snacks, folding chairs, and photography equipment.
Transfers and Connections
Important: Never plan connecting flights via Luancheng. The airfield does not have a transit zone. If you have a transfer in Shijiazhuang involving a change of airports (from SJW to LCT or vice versa — for example, to transfer to a private jet), allow at least 3–4 hours for the transfer between airports. There is no direct shuttle between them; you will have to travel by taxi through the city.
Money-Saving Tips
- Food and Drinks: Prices at food courts during exhibitions are inflated. You will save time and money if you bring snacks and a supply of water with you.
- Transport: Taxi drivers at the airfield gates may inflate prices for foreigners. Use official apps (DiDi or Alipay) to book a car at a fixed rate.
- Souvenirs: Buying aircraft models and commemorative memorabilia is cheaper in the final hours of the exhibition when sellers are ready to offer discounts.
What to Do in Case of Departure Delay
Small aviation is extremely dependent on weather conditions (wind, visibility). If your sightseeing or private flight is delayed:
- Do not panic; this is common practice for light aircraft.
- Use the waiting time to visit the aircraft factory exhibition pavilion — you can learn many interesting things about the history of the Y-5 aircraft there.
- Tea and comfortable sofas are usually offered in the FBO zone, but there is little entertainment, so keep a book or downloaded content on your smartphone handy.
