General Weather Overview

The city of Brno has a temperate continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. This means travellers can expect warm, and sometimes hot summers, and cold winters with temperatures dropping below freezing. Precipitation is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year, without a clearly defined rainy season, making the weather generally predictable for trip planning.

Summer, especially in July and August, is the warmest time of the year with an average temperature of around 20°C. This is the ideal period for long walks and exploring the city. Winter, from December to February, brings cool weather, and the thermometer often stays around zero or drops lower, so snowfall is possible. Spring and autumn are wonderful transitional seasons with mild but changeable weather, which are perfect for those who prefer to avoid the summer heat and winter cold.

Temperature

The climate in Brno has a distinct continental character with four clear seasons. The annual temperature variation shows significant fluctuations: from cool winters to very warm summers. The coldest month is traditionally January, with an average temperature of about 0.3°C and night-time lows dropping below freezing (averaging -2.1°C). The hottest months are July and August, when the average temperature reaches 20.5°C, and daytime highs regularly rise above 25°C.

The summer months, from June to August, offer guests and residents of Brno comfortable and warm weather. Daytime temperatures during this period are usually in the range of 23–25°C, which is ideal for long walks and exploring the city. It is worth noting that nights bring a pleasant coolness — the temperature drops to 14–15°C, creating a noticeable daily difference. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with mild and changeable weather. For example, in April the average daytime temperature is about 14°C, and in October — a pleasant 14.7°C.

Winter in Brno, from December to February, is cold but usually without extreme frosts. Average daytime temperatures fluctuate between 2°C and 5°C, while at night the thermometer often drops just below freezing. Such weather creates a classic Central European winter atmosphere, conducive to visiting cosy cafes and indoor attractions.

Precipitation

In Brno, precipitation is distributed throughout the year, although there is a noticeable difference between seasons. There is no distinct rainy or dry season here, but the amount and nature of precipitation vary. Overall, the city's climate is moderate, allowing for comfortable travel at any time, provided one is prepared for possible rain.

The wettest period falls in late spring and summer. The highest amount of precipitation falls from May to September. May holds the record for the number of rainy days — averaging about 14. Summer months, such as June and August, are also quite wet, with 12-13 days of precipitation. Summer rains are often short but can be intense, bringing freshness on hot days.

Winter and early spring are the driest period of the year in terms of total precipitation volume. The least falls from January to April. However, this does not mean a complete absence of moisture: January and December have approximately 12 days with precipitation each. Given that the average temperature at this time hovers around zero, precipitation often falls as snow. The driest month in terms of "wet" days is March, when there are only about seven.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Brno, it is worth paying special attention to your wardrobe choice to feel comfortable in any weather. The main rule for this city is comfortable footwear. You will be walking a lot on cobblestone streets, so trainers or sturdy boots will be the best choice. The climate in Brno is moderate, but the weather can be changeable. This applies especially to spring and autumn, when a sunny day can turn into a cool wind. Therefore, the principle of layering is your key to success. A t-shirt, sweater, and jacket will allow you to quickly adapt to temperature changes. Considering the frequent number of days with precipitation throughout the year, a compact umbrella or raincoat will be indispensable.

For a summer trip (June-August), pack light clothing: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses. Days are usually warm and sunny, but for evening walks or in case of rain, it is worth having a light cardigan or windbreaker with you. Don't forget sunscreen. In winter (December-February), the weather requires serious warm clothing. The temperature often drops below freezing, so a warm jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves are mandatory. Waterproof boots that protect against the cold and wet snow are best.
