General Weather Overview

In Carlsbad, a moderate continental climate prevails, characterised by a distinct change of four seasons. This means that the weather here is quite varied throughout the year, offering tourists different experiences depending on the time of their visit. In general, the climate can be described as mild, without extremes in the form of sweltering heat or severe frosts, although with noticeable temperature fluctuations between summer and winter.

The summer months, especially July and August, give Carlsbad pleasant warmth with average temperatures around 17-18°C and maximum values reaching 22°C. This is the ideal time for walking and enjoying the resort atmosphere. Winters, on the contrary, are cool, with average temperatures hovering around zero degrees Celsius, especially in January and December, when frosts and snowfall are possible. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with moderate temperatures but more changeable weather.

As for precipitation, it is distributed in Carlsbad quite evenly throughout the year, without a pronounced rainy season. A small amount of precipitation falls monthly (2-3 mm), with the number of days with precipitation varying from 11 to 16 per month. This means that light rain is possible at any time of the year, so tourists should be prepared for such a possibility.

Temperature

The climate in Carlsbad is characterised by noticeable seasonal temperature fluctuations. The coldest months are traditionally January, when the average temperature is -0.5°C and night-time minimums can drop to -2.6°C, and February with an average temperature of 0.4°C and similar minimum values. The warmest weather settles in during the summer months, especially in August, when the average temperature reaches 17.6°C and daytime highs can rise to 22.2°C, and in July with an average temperature of 17.3°C and a maximum daytime temperature of 22.1°C.

Summer in Carlsbad is, as a rule, pleasantly warm, but not exhaustingly hot. Daytime temperatures in June, July, and August usually range from 21°C to 22°C. Nights bring refreshing coolness, with temperatures dropping to 11.5°C - 12.9°C, creating comfortable conditions for rest. The average daily temperatures of the summer months vary from 16.3°C in June to 17.6°C in August. Spring months, such as April and May, show gradual warming: in April the average temperature is 7.0°C, and in May it is already 11.0°C, with daytime highs reaching 11.8°C and 15.7°C respectively.

The winter period in Carlsbad is quite cool, often frosty, especially at night. From December to February, average minimum temperatures consistently stay below zero (from -1.7°C to -2.6°C), and daytime highs rarely exceed 1.7°C - 3.4°C. The average monthly temperature in these months hovers around 0°C. In autumn, a smooth decrease in temperature occurs: in September the average temperature still holds at 13.2°C, but already in October it falls to 9.2°C, and in November it is only 3.1°C. Noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations are observed throughout the year, especially in the spring and summer months, when the difference between day and night readings can be about 9-10°C, while in winter this difference is smaller, about 4-5°C.

Precipitation

In Carlsbad, precipitation is distributed quite evenly throughout the year, judging by its total amount, and there is no pronounced rainy season or dry period here. Monthly, an extremely small amount of precipitation falls, usually from 2 to 3 mm. This suggests that heavy downpours are practically excluded here; instead, drizzling rain or very light precipitation prevails.

In winter, especially in December, January, and February, when average temperatures often drop below zero or fluctuate around this mark, precipitation most often falls in the form of very light snow or frost. In January and December, as well as in May, the highest number of days with precipitation is observed – about 16 days per month. Rain prevails in spring and summer. Despite the fact that May, June, and August formally receive slightly more precipitation (3 mm), it still remains extremely moderate and is distributed over 13-16 days with precipitation, indicating frequent but not intense drizzling rains.

The smallest number of days with precipitation falls on the autumn months, particularly on September and November, when their number decreases to approximately 11 days. However, even during these periods, the probability of encountering overcast weather with light precipitation remains. In general, Carlsbad is characterised by high relative humidity and frequent, but very light precipitation throughout the year, whether it be drizzling rain in the warm season or light snow in winter.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Carlsbad, it is important to consider the changeable weather characteristic of this region of the Czech Republic. The key point is layering in clothing, as the temperature can change noticeably even within a single day. An indispensable item in your luggage will be comfortable shoes for walking on cobblestones and hilly terrain. Considering that the number of days with precipitation is quite high throughout the year (from 11 to 16 days per month), although the precipitation itself is usually not abundant (2-3 mm), a light folding umbrella or a waterproof jacket will be very useful.

In the winter months (from December to February), the average temperature fluctuates around 0°C, often dropping below zero, so be sure to take warm outerwear (a down jacket or winter coat), a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Warm sweaters and thermal underwear will not be superfluous. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are characterised by cool weather: average temperatures gradually increase from +2.9°C in March to +11°C in May and decrease from +13.2°C in September to +3.1°C in November. During these periods, you will need a mid-season jacket, sweaters, cardigans, and possibly a light hat, especially in early spring and late autumn.

The summer months (June-August) in Carlsbad are usually warm, with an average temperature of about +16°C to +17.6°C and maximum values reaching +21-22°C. Light trousers, shorts, t-shirts, and dresses are suitable for this time of year. However, evenings can be cool, so do not forget to take a light jacket, jumper, or cardigan with you. Sunscreen and headgear will also come in handy on sunny summer days. Regardless of the season, it is always useful to have several layers of clothing to easily adapt to any whims of the weather.
