General Weather Overview

Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic boasts a tropical climate that ensures warm weather throughout the year. Temperature fluctuations during the year are minimal: average daily temperatures range from 24°C to 27.5°C. This makes the city attractive to visit at any time, as there are practically no sharp temperature changes.

Although distinct wet and dry seasons, typical of many tropical regions, are not observed in Puerto Plata, rainfall amounts remain low year-round, totaling just 1-3 mm per month. However, it is worth noting the number of "wet days," which varies from 9 to 18 days per month. This suggests that light, short-lived rains or drizzle can be a fairly frequent occurrence, even if the total precipitation volume is small. The summer months, from June to September, are generally the hottest, with average maximum temperatures around 30°C, while the winter months are slightly cooler.

Temperature

Puerto Plata delights its guests with pleasant tropical weather all year round, although temperature patterns have their own seasonal features. Overall, the annual temperature range here is quite stable, without sharp drops. The hottest months are traditionally August and September, when the average daily temperature holds at around 27.5°C, and maximum values can rise above 30°C. The coolest period is February, with an average air temperature of about 24.0°C, while nighttime lows drop to an average of 21.6°C, creating very comfortable conditions for resting from the daytime heat.

The summer months in Puerto Plata, from June to September, are characterized as hot and humid. Daytime temperatures often reach 29-30°C, and sometimes higher, while nights bring only slight relief, with temperatures rarely falling below 24-25°C. The winter period, from December to March, offers milder weather. During the day, the thermometer usually shows a pleasant 26-27°C, and nights become noticeably fresher, with temperatures around 21-22°C. Fluctuations between day and night temperatures throughout the year average 4-5°C, ensuring a comfortable stay at any time of day, allowing you to enjoy the coolness of the evenings after a hot day.

Precipitation

In Puerto Plata, precipitation is distributed quite specifically throughout the year. Although there is no pronounced season of torrential rains here, as in some other tropical regions, the number of days with precipitation varies noticeably. Overall, monthly rainfall volumes remain surprisingly low year-round, indicating predominantly light rains rather than heavy downpours.

The highest frequency of precipitation is observed in autumn. Thus, October is the month with the largest number of rainy days – on average 18, although the total rainfall volume is only about 2 mm. September is slightly behind, recording about 17 days with precipitation and a slightly larger volume – approximately 3 mm, making it the "wettest" month in terms of moisture fallen. It is important to understand that even during these periods, we are mostly talking about frequent but very light or short-lived rains.

The relatively drier period falls on the summer months. June and July stand out as the months with the least amount of rainfall – just about 1 mm in each. At the same time, June also records the fewest number of rainy days – on average 9 days. The remaining months, such as January, February, March, April, May, August, November, and December, demonstrate similar figures: about 2 mm of precipitation distributed over 11-16 rainy days. This also indicates that precipitation, if it occurs, is most often insignificant.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Puerto Plata, you should prepare for the warm tropical weather that prevails here all year round. The average annual temperature ranges from 24°C to 27.5°C, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget swimwear, high SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for protection against the strong sun. Although rainfall in millimetres is low, pay attention to the number of "wet days" – it can reach 12-18 days in some months, especially from September to December and in February-March. This means that short rains or drizzle are quite likely.

Despite the small amount of precipitation, having a light raincoat or a compact umbrella will be very useful, especially if your trip falls during months with a large number of wet days, such as September, October, November, December, as well as February and March. For walking around the city and excursions, choose comfortable shoes – sandals or light trainers. In the evening or in air-conditioned rooms, a light cardigan or shawl may come in handy. Although the temperature remains comfortable at night, minimum values rarely drop below 21-22°C, so you are unlikely to need warm clothing. Insect repellent may also be useful, especially in the evening.
