Axum Airport, also known as Emperor Yohannes IV Airport, serves as the aerial gateway to one of the most ancient and mysterious cities in Ethiopia. Situated at an altitude of over 2,100 metres above sea level, this airport is the starting point for travellers seeking to touch the history of the Kingdom of Aksum. Despite its modest size, the airport made history in 2005 by hosting one of the world's largest transport aircraft, the Antonov An-124, which returned the famous Obelisk of Axum from Italy to its homeland.
