About

On the picturesque coast of Vanua Levu, in the very heart of Savusavu, lies a remarkable place — the Copra Shed Marina. It is not just a mooring for yachts, but a true historical gem of Fiji, with a building dating back to 1906. Originally, it was used as a warehouse for storing and drying copra, which was shipped from here across the globe for oil production.

History & Facts

The history of this remarkable building began in 1906, when it was built by a planters' cooperative. In those days, Savusavu thrived on the production of copra — the dried meat of the coconut. The building served as a massive warehouse where sacks of the valuable raw material were weighed and prepared for shipment to oil mills in Suva or Levuka, and then on to Europe.

\n

The industry flourished until the mid-20th century, but by the 1980s, production had declined, and the historic structure began to fall into disrepair. The walls, built on stilts directly over the water, became weathered, yet the main frame remained surprisingly strong, preserving the spirit of Fiji's colonial era.

\n

The building was given a second life in 1989 through the efforts of businessman Anthony Philp and geologist Geoff Taylor. They were granted permission for restoration on the condition that the original architectural appearance was preserved. Thanks to their vision, the old warehouse was transformed into a modern world-class marina, becoming a symbol of the town's revival as a center for yacht tourism.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the marina, study the historical photographs on the walls, and browse the art gallery, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This place has a calm pace that invites contemplation.

\n

If you plan to have lunch at Captain's Café or spend the evening dining at Captain's Table, you should set aside about 3–4 hours for your visit. For sailors using the dock or laundry services, the marina often becomes a base for the entire day or even several days.

Working Hours

The marina complex maintains a convenient schedule for visitors, though the opening hours of individual cafes, shops, and the gallery may vary. It is recommended to plan your visit during daylight hours to fully enjoy the views.
