The main highlight of the grounds is a vast garden where more than 500 species of plants grow. Visitors are particularly delighted by the collection of 100 peony varieties, as well as the tidy beds of medicinal herbs and apple alleys leading down to the water. Kenkävero is not just an architectural monument, but a living space where history meets contemporary art and crafts.

Today, it houses the Syreeni applied arts center, designer boutiques with unique Finnish products, and a restaurant offering dishes made from local organic ingredients. This place is ideal for those seeking tranquility, who appreciate the aesthetics of northern wooden architecture and want to experience the traditions of the South Savo region at any time of year.

What to Do

At Kenkävero, everyone will find something to enjoy, from contemplative walks to active discovery of Finnish crafts. Be sure to stop by the Syreeni Center, where exhibitions of works by local artists are constantly updated. In the workshops, you can see potters and woodworkers at work, and in the designer boutique, you can purchase exclusive clothing, accessories, and delicacies of the South Savo region.

Nature lovers will find exploring the garden a true pleasure. You can feed the sheep and chickens in special pens, which children especially love, or simply relax on a bench overlooking Lake Saimaa. If you get hungry, the estate's restaurant offers dishes prepared according to old recipes using produce from its own garden, while the summer cafe on the shore is perfect for a coffee while enjoying the calm waters.

In winter, the estate turns into a fairytale setting: the residence of the Finnish Santa Claus (Joulupukki) opens here, along with Christmas markets and workshops for creating holiday decorations. In the warmer months, you can set off from the Kenkävero pier for a short cruise on the lake to appreciate the beauty of the Finnish landscape from a new perspective. Don't forget to find the monument near the entrance related to the estate's name and take a souvenir photo against the backdrop of the majestic wooden mansion.

Getting There

The Kenkävero estate is located at Pursialankatu 6, just one kilometer from the center of Mikkeli. This makes it extremely accessible for tourists: a leisurely walk from the market square or the cathedral will take about 15–20 minutes through picturesque and well-maintained streets.

For those traveling by car, convenient free parking is provided right on the grounds. The drive from Helsinki via the E75 highway takes about three hours. If you prefer public transport, you can take a bus to the Mikkeli central station and then catch a taxi or walk.

During the warmer months, you can also arrive by water—the local pier accepts vessels cruising on Lake Saimaa. Cycling is also an excellent option, as the city infrastructure is perfect for comfortable bike rides.

History & Facts

The history of this site is rooted in the deep past—the first mentions of a parsonage here date back to the 15th century. For five centuries, the estate served not only as a residence for the clergy but also as an important spiritual and cultural center for the South Savo region, largely shaping the way of life for local residents.

The name Kenkävero is shrouded in curious legends. In Finnish, it literally translates to "shoe tax". According to one version, parishioners walking to church from afar barefoot to save their shoes would only put them on before entering the priest's house. Another legend says that once, the services of a cantor or spiritual literature were paid for with a pair of sturdy boots or warm socks.

The estate acquired its modern appearance thanks to a large-scale restoration initiated by the city authorities in 1988. Today, it is the largest wooden vicarage in Finland, preserving the atmosphere of an old manor with its granaries, gardens, and traditional architecture that miraculously survived the whirlwinds of history.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore every corner of the Kenkävero estate, it is recommended to set aside 1.5 to 3 hours. This time is sufficient to get acquainted with the historical interiors of the main building, visit the exhibitions, and take a stroll through the magnificent garden, which is especially beautiful during the peony blooming season.

If your plans include lunch at the local restaurant featuring authentic cuisine or a cruise on Lake Saimaa departing from the estate's pier, you should allow for half a day. During themed fairs or festive events, you can easily spend 4 hours or more here.
