Jardin botanique de Tourcoing

About

A true green gem in the urban landscape of the country's north, the Tourcoing Botanical Garden is a harmonious blend of a municipal park and an arboretum. Spanning approximately 11,900 square meters in the heart of Tourcoing, this green space is home to over 2,000 plant species. France is famous for its traditions in landscape architecture, and this garden is a wonderful testament to that legacy.

The garden's territory is artfully divided into five thematic zones, each transporting visitors to different corners of the world or eras of garden fashion. Here, you can see both strict geometric lines and natural landscapes, complemented by modern educational greenhouses featuring exotic flora.

The history of the site adds special value: it was once the private estate of a generous benefactor who bequeathed his home and land to the city. Today, it is not just a collection of rare trees, but an oasis of tranquility and an important educational site where nature and history intertwine into a single whole.

What to Do

A stroll through the garden is a journey through various landscape design styles. Begin at the French Garden, where you are met with perfect lines, an elegant central fountain, and a magnificent pergola draped in white and blue wisteria flowers. Then, change the scenery in the English Garden, whose winding paths and eclectic spirit evoke the atmosphere of the late 19th century.

Be sure to stop by the educational greenhouses. This is where you can see amazing collections of orchids, fuchsias, and carnivorous plants such as the Sarracenia. Exotic plant enthusiasts will enjoy the succulents and airy tillandsias. Additionally, a small natural history museum is located on the grounds, featuring an interesting collection of insects.

For those looking for something unusual, the "New Garden" dedicated to the flora of North America was opened in 2005. It is divided into northeast and northwest sectors, gathering tree species characteristic of those latitudes. If you are passionate about gardening, the site often hosts consultations and educational courses to help you learn more about caring for rare plants.

Getting There

This scenic spot of nature is located at 32 rue du Moulin Fagot in the central part of the city. Thanks to its convenient location in the Nord department, the garden is easily accessible for both locals and visitors to the Hauts-de-France region.

If you are planning a trip from other cities, it is most convenient to first reach Lille, which is the major transportation hub nearby. Regional trains, buses, and trams run regularly from Lille's stations to Tourcoing. Within the city itself, you can quickly reach the garden by taxi or by using local bus routes that stop within walking distance of the main entrance.

For those who prefer to travel by car, navigation is straightforward. Simply enter the coordinates 50.7242267, 3.1680602 into your GPS app. The garden is located within the city limits, so parking spaces can be found nearby, although it is recommended to arrive early on weekends.

History & Facts

The Tourcoing Botanical Garden owes its existence to Émile Leplat, a local textile magnate. The story began in the mid-19th century when a young Leplat traveled to Dublin to study the language. There, he not only met his future wife, Clara Whelan, but also fell in love with the aesthetics of British public parks, which later served as the foundation for his own project.

Upon returning home, Leplat and his wife, a passionate botanist, began transforming their private estate into a magnificent garden. In 1906, he drafted a will stating that the city could purchase his estate after his death under one condition: it must be turned into a public park. After the benefactor passed away in 1917, municipal authorities accepted the offer, and by 1919, the garden officially became city property.

Since its opening, the area has been equipped not only with walking paths but also with greenhouses and a natural history museum. The French and English gardens that visitors see today are the original landscape features created by the Leplat family over a century ago.

In the modern era, the garden continues to evolve. In 2010, it officially joined the Association of Botanical Gardens of France, confirming its high scientific and cultural status. Today, it is not just a place for walks, but an important educational center that has preserved the charm of a private early 20th-century estate.

Time Needed

To leisurely stroll through the main paths and enjoy the landscape design, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This time is enough to appreciate the contrast between the formal French style and the relaxed English garden layout.

However, if you plan to visit the educational greenhouses, examine the exotic plant collections, or visit the natural history museum, we recommend allowing about 3 hours for your visit. The garden is perfect for contemplative relaxation, so there is no need to rush.
