Overview

The climate in Piraeus, located in Greece, is typically Mediterranean. This means the city boasts long, hot, and predominantly dry summers, while winters are mild and wetter. Overall, the weather in Piraeus is favorable for tourism throughout most of the year, offering an abundance of sunny days, especially during the summer period.

The summer months, from June to August, are characterized by high temperatures, with the mercury often rising above 30°C (the average maximum in July and August is around 32°C), and precipitation is virtually non-existent—rainy days are minimal in July and August. Winter, covering the period from December to February, remains mild, with average temperatures around 9-11°C. This time of year sees more rainfall, but it is generally moderate, with the highest number of rainy days in January and December. Spring and autumn are comfortable transition seasons with pleasantly warm weather and a moderate number of sunny days, making them also attractive times to visit Piraeus.

The annual temperature regime in Piraeus follows a classic Mediterranean pattern with clearly defined seasons. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average air temperature reaches nearly 28°C (27.8°C in July and 27.6°C in August), and daytime highs regularly climb above 32°C. The coolest period falls in January and February, with average temperatures around 9-10°C (9.1°C in January, 10.0°C in February) and average nightly minimums dropping to 6-6.5°C. Starting from March, the temperature gradually increases, reaching a comfortable average of 20°C by May, and similarly declines from September to November, when the average temperature in November is about 14.8°C.

Summer in Piraeus is characterized by true heat, especially at the peak of the season. From June to August, daytime temperatures consistently remain high: in June, the average maximum is about 29.8°C, while in July and August, it is around 32.6°C and 32.1°C respectively. Nights bring only relative relief, with temperatures rarely falling below 20°C (average minimums of 20.1°C in June, 22.9°C in July, and 23.0°C in August). Conversely, the winter months are quite mild. In December, January, and February, average daytime temperatures range between 12-14°C (maximums of 14.1°C in December, 12.2°C in January, and 13.6°C in February), while nighttime temperatures can drop to 6-8°C. Precipitation

Piraeus experiences a pronounced seasonality in its precipitation patterns, characteristic of a Mediterranean climate. The city enjoys a very dry and sunny summer, while winter brings a bit more moisture, although the total amount of precipitation throughout the year remains low. Snowfall is uncommon for Piraeus, given the mild winter temperatures; precipitation primarily falls as rain.

The driest period in Piraeus occurs during the summer months. July and August are the absolute leaders in dryness, with average precipitation at 0 mm and only about 2 rainy days each month. Dry weather also prevails in late spring and early autumn: May, June, September, and October see only about 1 mm of precipitation, with the number of rainy days ranging from 3 to 5. During these periods, if rain does occur, it is usually brief and light.

The highest amount of precipitation and the most rainy days occur during the winter months. January and December are considered the "wettest," with 2 mm of precipitation and approximately 10 rainy days each. November (2 mm, 8 rainy days) and February (2 mm, 9 rainy days) follow closely. March also brings about 1 mm of precipitation with 8 rainy days. It is important to note that even in these wetter months, the total amount of precipitation remains low, indicating primarily light or moderate rain rather than prolonged downpours.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Piraeus, consider its sunny Mediterranean climate. From late spring to early autumn, especially during the summer months (June–August) when temperatures often rise above 30°C and rain is rare, your wardrobe should consist primarily of light and breathable clothing. Items made of cotton and linen, shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses are ideal. Be sure to pack a swimsuit, sunscreen with high SPF, a hat or cap, and sunglasses. For evening walks by the sea, a light wrap or a thin windbreaker may come in handy, as it can be windy, especially near the water.

During the cooler months, from November to March, when average temperatures hover around 9-12°C and the likelihood of rainy days increases (although precipitation is usually not heavy, averaging about 2 mm in the wettest months with 8-10 rainy days), you will need warmer clothing. We recommend bringing jeans or thick trousers, sweaters, a fleece, and a mid-season jacket. The principle of layering is perfect here, allowing you to feel comfortable both outdoors and indoors. Don't forget comfortable closed-toe shoes, perhaps waterproof in case of rain, and a compact umbrella or light raincoat. Regardless of the season, comfortable footwear for long walks around the port city and its surroundings is your top priority.
