Overview

The climate in Kendrapara, India, is classified as a tropical monsoon climate. The city experiences high temperatures throughout most of the year, with significant seasonal fluctuations in humidity and rainfall. Overall, the weather is warm to hot, which is typical for the region.

Kendrapara has three distinct seasons. The hot and mostly dry season lasts from March to May, when average daily temperatures peak, often exceeding 30-31°C, while maximums can reach 35-36°C. Then, from June to September, the monsoon season arrives. During this period, temperatures drop slightly, but the amount of rainfall and the number of rainy days increase significantly, peaking in July and August. A cooler and drier season sets in from October to February. Temperatures become more comfortable, especially in December and January (around 21°C), and rainfall is minimal.

The most notable feature of Kendrapara's weather is the pronounced rainy season during the summer months (June–September). During this time, the number of rainy days increases sharply, bringing the bulk of the annual precipitation. In contrast, the winter months are very dry, with minimal rainfall and plenty of sunshine.

Temperature

The city of Kendrapara enjoys a warm climate year-round, though with noticeable seasonal temperature fluctuations. The hottest period occurs in April and May. In April, the average temperature is 31.0°C, with daytime highs reaching up to 36.1°C and nighttime lows staying around 25.8°C. May is also very hot, with an average temperature 31.4°C, maximums of up to 35.6°C, and nightly minimums of 27.2°C. The coolest months are January and December. In January, the average temperature drops to 21.1°C, with nightly lows around 15.7°C and daytime highs up to 26.5°C. December is very similar, with an average temperature of 21.4°C.

The summer months, from March to October, are characterized by high temperatures. March already brings significant warming, with an average temperature of 28.4°C. From June to September, although the peak heat subsides slightly (average temperatures around 29–31°C), the monsoon season arrives. During this time, daytime temperatures hover around 31–34°C, while nighttime temperatures remain high, around 26–27°C. The high humidity accompanying the heavy rains makes the heat feel quite intense. For example, in July and August, the average temperature stays around 29°C, and the number of rainy days reaches 29 per month.

The winter period, from November to February, offers residents and visitors of Kendrapara milder and more comfortable weather. In November, the average temperature is 24.6°C, and in February, it is 24.1°C. During the day, the air warms up to a pleasant 26–30°C, cooling down to 16–20°C at night. The fluctuation between day and night temperatures is more pronounced in the winter months than in the summer and can be around 10–11°C (for instance, in January, the difference between the average maximum of 26.5°C and the average minimum of 15.7°C is 10.8°C). During the summer, especially the monsoon months, this difference is smaller due to high humidity and cloud cover (for example, in July, the difference is only 4.9°C).

Precipitation

Kendrapara has a clear division between wet and dry seasons. The dry period usually lasts from November to March, when precipitation is minimal. As summer approaches, conditions become more humid, peaking during the summer monsoon, which brings the majority of the annual rainfall.

The rainy season, or monsoon, generally spans from June to September. During this time, precipitation becomes much more frequent. August is the wettest month, with an average of 12 mm of rainfall and rain occurring almost daily (about 29 rainy days). July is also very rainy, with about 10 mm of precipitation and approximately 29 rainy days, as is September (10 mm, 28 days). Interestingly, despite the high frequency of rain, the total amount of precipitation is not extremely high, suggesting a prevalence of frequent but moderate or light showers rather than constant heavy downpours.

The driest months in Kendrapara are January, February, March, November, and December. During this period, only about 1 mm of precipitation falls in each of these months, and the number of rainy days does not exceed 2–5, making rain a rare occurrence. April, May (2–3 mm of rainfall, 8–9 rainy days), and October (5 mm of rainfall, about 16 rainy days) are transition months when precipitation gradually increases before the monsoon or decreases after it ends. Given the consistently warm temperatures year-round, all precipitation falls as rain.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Kendrapara, keep in mind that the climate is warm throughout the year. The core of your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. From November to May, when there is very little rainfall (1–3 mm per month), you will need T-shirts, shorts, and light trousers or skirts. During the hottest months from March to June, when average high temperatures reach 33–36°C, loose-fitting clothes in light colors will help you handle the heat more comfortably. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the intense sun.

The rainy season in Kendrapara lasts from June to October. During this period, especially from July to September, rain is very frequent (28–29 rainy days per month), although total rainfall is moderate (6–12 mm per month). Be sure to pack a sturdy umbrella or a light raincoat. Clothes made of quick-drying materials and waterproof shoes or sandals that aren't damaged by moisture will be very useful. In cooler months like December and January, when average minimum temperatures drop to 15–16°C, a light sweater, fleece jacket, or shawl will come in handy, especially for evenings and early mornings.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring the city. It is also recommended to bring insect repellent. Layering your clothes is a good idea, allowing you to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day or when moving between air-conditioned indoor spaces and the outdoors. Given the cultural traditions of India, it's worth packing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for visiting temples and other religious sites.
