General Weather Overview

The climate in Lucknow is characterized as subtropical, with clearly defined seasons and significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The city experiences a hot summer, a humid monsoon season, and a mild, pleasant winter, making it attractive to visit during specific periods.

Three main seasons can be distinguished in Lucknow. The hot and predominantly dry season lasts from March to June, when temperatures can reach very high levels, especially in April and May (maximum temperature reaches up to 38.2°C). Then, from July to September, the monsoon season arrives, bringing the bulk of annual rainfall and increased humidity; daytime temperatures during this period average around 32-33°C. The winter season, from October to February, is characterized by comfortable and dry weather. October remains quite warm, with daytime highs around 31.9°C and minimum nighttime temperatures around 21°C. From November to February, the weather becomes cooler: daytime temperatures range from 20.3°C to 27.6°C, and nights can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to 8.8°C.

The most notable feature of the weather in Lucknow is the distinct monsoon period. July and August are the wettest months, with the highest amount of precipitation (9-10 mm on average per month, according to the provided data) and the maximum number of rainy days (25-26 days per month). In contrast, the period from October to May is very dry, with minimal precipitation. November and December stand out in particular with an almost complete absence of rain (about 0 mm of precipitation).

Temperature

Lucknow observes a distinct annual temperature progression, characteristic of a subtropical climate. The hottest months are traditionally considered to be May and June. In May, the average maximum temperature reaches 38.2°C, and the average monthly temperature is 31.9°C. June is often even hotter in terms of average temperature (32.7°C), while maximum daytime values hover around 37.5°C. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to 14.5°C, the average minimum nighttime temperature is 8.8°C, and the daytime temperature does not exceed 20.3°C on average.

The summer season, covering the period from March to June, is characterized by a gradual and significant increase in heat. In March, the average maximum temperature already reaches 31.2°C. April brings real scorching heat with an average high of 37.4°C and an average temperature of 29.8°C. May and June are the peak of the heat, when daytime temperatures regularly stay above 37°C. In June, before the onset of the monsoon season, the number of humid days also increases, which can intensify the feeling of sultriness.

The winter period, from October to February, offers residents and guests of Lucknow significantly more comfortable temperature conditions. October is a transitional month with an average temperature of 26.4°C and daytime highs around 31.9°C. From November (average temperature 21.3°C) to February (average temperature 18.4°C), mild and pleasant weather sets in. Days are usually warm, with maximum temperatures ranging from 20.3°C in January to 27.6°C in November. Nights, especially in December (average minimum 10.1°C) and January (average minimum 8.8°C), can be quite cool. During these dry months (especially from November to April), substantial diurnal temperature variations are observed, where the difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum can be 12-15°C, providing pleasant freshness after a warm day.

Precipitation

Lucknow experiences distinct seasonality in precipitation, driven by the influence of monsoons. The year is clearly divided into a wet season, when the bulk of precipitation falls, and a prolonged dry period with minimal rainfall.

The rainy season, or monsoon, usually falls during the months from June to September. The highest amount of precipitation falls in July (on average 10 mm) and August (9 mm). During these months, it rains very frequently: July sees about 25 rainy days, and August sees 26 days, making it the month with the highest frequency of precipitation. June (4 mm of precipitation, 11 rainy days) and September (6 mm of precipitation, 19 rainy days) are transitional but are also characterized by a significant increase in humidity compared to the dry season.

The dry season in Lucknow is quite long and covers the period from October to May. The driest months are November, December, and April, when precipitation amounts to 0 mm. Furthermore, on average, there are no rainy days in November, only 1 day in December, and 3 days in April. The remaining months of the dry season—January, February, March, May, and October—are also characterized by very low precipitation levels (about 1 mm each) and a small number of rainy days (from 3 to 5).

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Lucknow, it is important to pack wisely, taking into account the distinct seasonality of the climate. Regardless of the time of year, you will definitely need comfortable shoes for long walks, sunscreen, a hat for sun protection, and perhaps a light scarf or stole. The principle of layering in clothing will become your reliable companion, as daily temperature fluctuations can be significant, especially during the winter months and the transitional seasons.

During the hot period, which lasts from March to June, when daytime temperatures can rise to 38°C and above, give preference to light, loose clothing made from natural breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget sunglasses. With the arrival of the monsoon, from July to September, comes a time of high humidity and frequent rains (especially in July and August, when there are up to 25-26 rainy days). During this period, you cannot do without a light raincoat or waterproof jacket, an umbrella, and quick-drying clothes. An extra pair of shoes may also be useful.

From October to February, cooler and more comfortable weather sets in in Lucknow. October and November will delight you with warm days and pleasant evenings—T-shirts, light trousers, and a cardigan or thin sweater will be appropriate here. The winter months, from December to February, require a warmer approach: nighttime temperatures can drop to 8-10°C. Therefore, it is worth packing a fleece jacket, a mid-season jacket, jeans, or thick trousers. Closed shoes and a scarf will also be useful for evening walks during this dry and cool season.
