General Weather Overview

The climate in Prayagraj can be described as transitional, with features of a tropical monsoon climate, distinguished by clearly defined seasons. The city experiences a very hot and predominantly dry period, followed by a wet monsoon season, and then a mild and dry winter. These clearly outlined climatic phases shape weather conditions throughout the year, offering a diverse experience for visitors.

The hottest months are April and May, when the average maximum air temperature can rise to nearly 40°C, while rainfall is minimal. From the arrival of June until the end of September, the southwest monsoon comes to Prayagraj. During this period, temperatures drop slightly compared to the peak values of May, but humidity and the number of rainy days increase significantly. July and August are the wettest months, when rainfall can occur most of the time. The winter season, spanning from December to February, brings pleasant coolness: average temperatures fluctuate in the 15-20°C range, and precipitation becomes rare, creating comfortable conditions for exploring the city.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Prayagraj is characterized by significant fluctuations throughout the year. The hottest period is usually May and June. In May, the average maximum temperature reaches 39.2°C, and the monthly average is about 32.8°C. June is also very hot, with an average temperature of 33.4°C and maximum values around 38.1°C. The coolest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of about 15.4°C, when nighttime lows can drop to 9.6°C, and daytime highs usually do not exceed 21.1°C.

The summer season in Prayagraj effectively begins as early as April, when the average daytime temperature rises to 31.0°C, and the maximum can reach 38.6°C. This period, including May, is characterized by dry heat. With the arrival of June, despite high temperatures persisting (average maximum 38.1°C), the monsoon season begins, bringing high humidity. In July and August, the wettest months, average daytime highs drop slightly to 32-33°C; however, due to high humidity, the heat may feel more intense. September continues this trend with a slight decrease in temperature.

Winter in Prayagraj, covering the period from December to February, offers significantly more comfortable conditions. In December, the average temperature is about 17.3°C, with daytime highs up to 23.4°C and nighttime lows around 11.3°C. January, the coldest month, is characterized by an average temperature of 15.4°C, while during the day the air warms up to a pleasant 21.1°C. February marks a gradual warming with an average temperature of 19.5°C. For Prayagraj, especially in the dry months (October to April), noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations are characteristic: the difference between daytime and nighttime readings can reach 10-15°C. During the monsoon period (June-September), these fluctuations are smoothed out due to increased humidity and cloud cover.

Precipitation

Prayagraj sees pronounced seasonality in precipitation, with a clear division into a wet monsoon period and a prolonged dry season. The bulk of the rain falls during the summer months, bringing much-needed moisture after a hot and arid spring.

The monsoon season in Prayagraj usually lasts from June to September. The highest amount of rainfall occurs in July (averaging 11 mm) and August (10 mm). Rains occur very frequently during these months: July counts about 25 rainy days, and August – as many as 26 days. June serves as a transitional month, when rainfall (5 mm) and rainy days (12) begin to noticeably increase, while in September (7 mm, 19 rainy days) the intensity of the monsoon gradually weakens. The nature of precipitation during this period is typically rains of varying intensity associated with monsoon flows.

The dry season covers the period from October to May. During this time, precipitation is extremely rare. The driest months are November, when on average there are no rainy days and no precipitation is registered (0 mm), as well as February, March, April, and December, where rainfall is also zero, although there may be 1-3 days with insignificant precipitation, possibly in the form of light drizzle. In January and May, only 1 mm of rainfall occurs, distributed over 3-4 days. Overall, from late autumn to the end of spring, the weather in Prayagraj is predominantly sunny and dry.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Prayagraj, it is important to consider its climatic features, which change noticeably throughout the year. In the hot season, which lasts roughly from April to June, when daytime temperatures can rise to 38-39°C and rainfall is minimal, the main focus should be on light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen). Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF factor to protect against the scorching sun. Comfortable open-toed shoes will also be very handy.

With the arrival of the monsoons, usually from late June to September, the weather in Prayagraj changes drastically. This period is characterized by high humidity and frequent, sometimes heavy, rains, especially in July and August, when the number of rainy days can reach 25-26 per month. At this time, you cannot do without a reliable umbrella or a light raincoat. Preference should be given to clothing made of quick-drying materials and water-resistant shoes or sandals. Despite the rain, the temperature remains high, so clothing should be light.

The autumn-winter period, from October to March, is considered the most comfortable for visiting Prayagraj. Precipitation is rare at this time, and the air temperature is pleasant: during the day it can reach 21-32°C, dropping at night, especially in December-January, to 9-13°C. For this season, the layering principle in clothing is ideal: light t-shirts and shirts for the daytime, as well as a sweater, fleece jacket, or light jacket for cool evenings and morning hours. Regardless of the season, comfortable closed-toe shoes for long walks and sightseeing will be your best companion.
