General Weather Character

The climate in Rajahmundry can be described as hot and tropical, with a clear division into dry and wet periods. High temperatures persist throughout the year, so travellers should be prepared for warm, and at times sweltering, weather. Even during the "coldest" months, the thermometer rarely drops below comfortable levels, making the city accessible for visits all year round if you love the warmth.

Three seasons stand out clearly in the city's weather calendar. Summer, lasting from March to May, is characterised by intense heat, with temperatures regularly rising above 36°C. From June to October comes the monsoon season: the number of rainy days increases sharply (up to 20–24 days per month), bringing high humidity and heavy rainfall. Winter, from November to February, delights with dry and mild weather without extreme heat, which is considered the ideal time for excursions and walks.

Temperature

The climate in Rajahmundry is characterised by high temperatures for most of the year, reaching its peak in the pre-monsoon period. The hottest month is traditionally May, when the average daily maximum is about 36.8°C, and nights remain very warm with temperatures around 27.5°C. April is also notable for intense heat, so travellers planning a visit at this time should be prepared for hot weather.

With the arrival of the rainy season in June, temperature readings begin to gradually decrease. In July, August, and September, the average temperature holds at a comfortable 28°C. During this period, the difference between day and night readings becomes less pronounced, and air humidity rises, creating a typical tropical atmosphere, but without the extreme spring heat.

The most pleasant time to visit is considered the winter months — December and January. During this period, mild and sunny weather sets in: during the day the air warms up to 29°C, and at night it cools down to a refreshing 19-20°C. Such a temperature difference allows you to enjoy warm days and cool evenings, which is ideal for excursions and walking around the city.

Precipitation

In Rajahmundry, there is a clear division of the year into dry and wet seasons, which is typical for the climate of this region of India. The beginning of the year, especially January and February, is characterised by almost a complete absence of precipitation: only 1–2 rainy days are recorded in these months, and rainfall levels tend towards zero. This time is considered the most favourable for tourists who prefer dry and clear weather for walking and sightseeing.

The situation changes drastically with the arrival of summer. Already in June, the number of days with precipitation rises sharply to 20, marking the beginning of the rainy season. The wettest month in terms of rainfall frequency is July, when it can rain for up to 24 days. A high probability of precipitation also persists in August and September, when rainy weather lasts for more than 20 days a month, bringing necessary moisture to the region.

In autumn, the intensity of the rains gradually decreases. While October still sees about 17 rainy days, by November their number is halved. December completes the climatic cycle, returning the city to dry conditions with minimal precipitation (on average 3 wet days), making the end of the year another comfortable period for visiting.

What to Pack

Given the warm climate of Rajahmundry, the foundation of your wardrobe should consist of light and breathable items made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Since air temperatures often exceed 30°C from March to May, be sure to bring reliable sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat or cap, high-quality sunglasses, and high SPF cream. Light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing will help you tolerate the heat more easily during these months.

From June to October, the region experiences a rainy season with a high number of wet days (up to 24 days in July), so an umbrella or a compact raincoat is a mandatory item in your suitcase during this period. Due to the high humidity, it is better to choose clothes that dry quickly and bring a pair of comfortable waterproof shoes suitable for walking on wet streets. Also, at this time of year, it is useful to have insect repellent with you.

The winter months, from December to February, delight with the most comfortable and dry weather, however, in the evenings, the temperature can drop to 19–20°C. For evening walks, it is recommended to bring a light sweater, cardigan, or windbreaker. Regardless of the season, for visiting temples and long excursions, you will need comfortable flat shoes that are easy to take off and put on.
