Kuala Kurun Airport (also known as Sanggu Airport) is located in close proximity to the town of Kuala Kurun, the administrative centre of the Gunung Mas Regency. As this is a small regional airport, the transport infrastructure here is quite simple and oriented towards local realities. The distance from the town centre to the terminal is only a few kilometres, so the journey will not take much time.
Travel Time and Location
The trip from the central part of Kuala Kurun to the airport usually takes 10 to 15 minutes by car or motorcycle. The road is generally not congested, though one should consider the possible road conditions during the rainy season.
Public Transport
It is important to note that in Kuala Kurun, as in many small towns in Indonesia, there is no metro or railway service. Classic city buses also do not run to the airport. The main means of transport for locals and tourists remains private transport providers.
Taxis and Transfers
The most reliable way to get to the airport is to use taxi services or private hire vehicles.
- Ojeks (Motorbike Taxis): This is the most popular and budget-friendly option in the region. Drivers on motorcycles can quickly deliver a passenger with small luggage to the terminal. The fare is usually negotiable and amounts to a small sum (approximately 20,000 – 50,000 Indonesian Rupiah).
- Private Cars: You can order a transfer through your hotel or find a driver in the town centre. It is recommended to agree on the price in advance before boarding, as meters are rarely used.
Car Rental and Parking
Renting a self-drive car in Kuala Kurun itself can be problematic. Most often, tourists rent a car with a driver in larger regional cities, such as Palangkaraya, and drive there. There is a small parking area on the airport grounds where vehicles can be left for a short time to drop off or pick up passengers.
Alternative Routes via Neighbouring Airports
Since direct flights to Kuala Kurun may be limited to light aviation, many travellers choose to fly into larger transport hubs and then reach their destination by land transport.
The nearest major hub is Tjilik Riwut Airport in the city of Palangkaraya (approximately 121 km in a straight line, but the journey by road will take about 3-4 hours). This is the most convenient option for connections.
There are also other air harbours in the region that may be useful when planning a complex itinerary:
- H. Asan Airport in the city of Sampit (about 182 km).
- Syamsudin Noor International Airport in Banjarmasin — a major hub located 274 km away, serving many flights.
- Iskandar Airport (about 300 km).
- Putussibau Airport (about 240 km).
Recommendations for Tourists
If you are flying out of Kuala Kurun, it is recommended to arrive at the airport 1 hour before departure, as check-in procedures are quite fast. Always carry cash (Indonesian Rupiah) in small denominations to pay for transport, as drivers often do not have change.
