On the picturesque coast of West Sumatra lies one of the region's most recognizable sites, steeped in the spirit of local legends. Batu Malin Kundang (The Stone of Malin Kundang) is a unique art installation located on Air Manis Beach in the city of Padang. The site features a sculptural group depicting a petrified man and the wreckage of his ship.

This unusual attraction appeared in the 1980s thanks to the work of Indonesian artists Dasril Bayras and Ibenzani Usman. Indonesia is famous for its rich folklore, and this sculpture was created to immortalize the cautionary tale of Malin Kundang, which is an integral part of the Minangkabau people's culture.
Today, the stone is considered a symbol of the importance of filial piety and is one of the country's main tourist landmarks. Each year, it attracts many visitors wishing to touch living history and enjoy the beauty of the coastal landscapes.
