General Weather Overview

The climate of Shiraz is characterised as semi-arid, with clearly defined seasons. The city is known for its hot and dry summers, as well as cool, relatively more humid winters. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are quite significant, which is important to consider when planning a trip.

The summer months, especially from June to September, in Shiraz are very hot and sunny, with average temperatures often exceeding 27°C, and maximums reaching 35-36°C. Precipitation during this period is practically non-existent. Winter, from December to February, brings coolness: average temperatures fluctuate around 5-8°C, sometimes dropping to freezing. It is during the winter months that the main, albeit small, portion of the annual precipitation falls.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November) are transitional seasons with more moderate temperatures. Spring sees gradual warming and a decrease in precipitation, while autumn sees a gradual cooling. These periods are often considered the most comfortable for visiting Shiraz thanks to the pleasant weather and lower rainfall compared to winter, but without the summer heat.

Temperature

The climate in Shiraz is characterised by significant annual temperature fluctuations, offering diverse weather conditions throughout the year. The hottest month is usually July, when the average temperature reaches 29.2°C, and maximum daily values can rise to an impressive 36.5°C. June is also very warm, with an average temperature of 27.7°C and peaks up to 35.4°C. Conversely, the coldest month is January, where the average temperature is 5.7°C, and night-time minimums can drop to -0.0°C. Thus, the annual temperature range in Shiraz is quite wide, which is important to consider when planning a trip.

Summer months in Shiraz, covering the period from June to August, are distinguished by a dry and hot weather character. Average maximum temperatures during this period confidently stay above 35°C, and precipitation is practically absent, creating conditions of dry heat. One of the notable features of the Shiraz climate is the significant difference between day and night temperatures. For example, in July, with a daily maximum of 36.5°C, the night temperature can drop to 21.8°C, bringing some relief after the day's heat. Such substantial diurnal fluctuations, often exceeding 14-15 degrees, are characteristic of the entire summer season.

Winter in Shiraz is generally mild but cool. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature holds at a level around 5.7°C. At night, the thermometer can drop to zero or even slightly lower, while during the day the temperature usually rises to 11.5°C. Similar conditions are observed in December and February, with average temperatures of 8.1°C and 8.0°C respectively, and daily maximums around 13-14°C. In winter, noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations also persist: for example, in January the difference between daytime warmth and night-time coolness can be more than 11 degrees. This means that even if the weather seems comfortable during the day, evenings and nights can be quite cold.

Precipitation

In the city of Shiraz, a distinct pattern of precipitation is observed throughout the year, with a clear division into dry and relatively wetter periods. Most of the year, especially from May to October, is characterised by extremely low rainfall or its complete absence.

The period with the highest probability of precipitation falls on the winter and early spring months. January, February, and March are the "wettest" months, but even at this time, the average amount of precipitation is small, amounting to about 2 mm per month. February stands out with the highest number of days with precipitation – on average 7 days. In January, with minimum temperatures around 0°C, rare precipitation may fall in the form of light snow or sleet, however, it will mainly be rain. From April, the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days gradually decrease.

Starting from May and until October, a prolonged dry season sets in Shiraz. In May, July, August, and October, the amount of precipitation averages zero, with there being only 1-3 days with insignificant rainfall. June and September are absolutely dry months, when precipitation practically does not fall. Thus, summer and the beginning of autumn in Shiraz are times of predominantly clear and dry weather.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Shiraz, it is important to consider its climatic features so that your wardrobe is comfortable and suitable for the weather. Summer (from June to August) here is hot and dry, with average maximum temperatures reaching 35-36.5°C. Therefore, be sure to bring light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics, a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. Winters (from December to February) in Shiraz are quite cool, the average temperature ranges from 5.7°C to 8.0°C, and night-time minimums can drop to zero and below. During this period, you will need warm items: sweaters, a jacket, possibly thermal underwear, as well as a hat and gloves. Although precipitation in Shiraz is generally low (0-2 mm per month), there are a few rainy days in winter, so a compact umbrella or a light waterproof jacket may come in handy.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with more moderate temperatures. In March, the average temperature is about 11.7°C, gradually rising to 21.2°C in May. In autumn, the temperature decreases from 24.9°C in September to 12.3°C in November. For these periods, the principle of layering is ideal: T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, light jumpers, and a jacket that can be taken off or put on depending on the weather. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable shoes for walking around the city and its numerous attractions will be your best companion.

Considering the cultural customs of Iran, women are advised to have a headscarf to cover their head and clothing that covers their arms and legs. Men should also prefer trousers and shirts, especially when visiting religious sites. A light scarf can be useful not only for complying with the dress code but also for protection from the sun or evening chill. Windy weather is not a characteristic feature of Shiraz, but a light windbreaker can be useful in transitional seasons or on cool evenings.
