General Weather Overview

The climate in Milan can be described as humid subtropical to continental, with four distinct seasons. This means travellers can expect significant fluctuations in temperature and weather conditions throughout the year. The city experiences quite cold winters and hot, sometimes humid, summers, while spring and autumn offer milder and more changeable conditions.

The summer months, especially July and August, are the warmest, with average temperatures reaching 24-25°C, while maximum values can approach 30°C. Winters, on the other hand, are cool, with average temperatures in January and December around 4-5°C, and night frosts. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with pleasant temperatures; however, it is during these periods, particularly in May and October, that higher rainfall may occur. Although the total amount of precipitation is not huge, it is worth noting the number of rainy days, which can be significant in some months, for example, in May (about 17 days).

Temperature

The temperature pattern in Milan shows distinct seasonality. The annual temperature range is quite wide: from cool winter months to hot summers. The coldest months are traditionally January, with an average temperature of about 4.4°C and minimum values dropping to 0.2°C, and December, where the average temperature is 4.5°C, and night lows can reach 0.9°C. In contrast, the peak heat occurs in July and August, when the average air temperature holds at the 24.7°C mark, and maximum daily readings often approach 29.5°C.

Summer months in Milan are characterized by consistently hot weather. Starting from June, when the average temperature is already 22.9°C and the maximum can reach 28.1°C, the city plunges into summer heat. In July and August, it gets even hotter: maximum daily temperatures often reach 29.4°C - 29.5°C. Nights also remain warm, with minimum temperatures around 19.9°C - 20.0°C, creating a warm, sometimes sultry, summer atmosphere, especially in the city centre. During this period, the difference between day and night temperatures is about 9-10°C, providing some relief after the daytime heat.

Winter in Milan brings significant cooling. In December and January, average temperatures hover around 4.4-4.5°C, with daily highs rarely exceeding 8.2°C - 8.6°C, and night temperatures regularly dropping to the 0.2°C - 0.9°C mark. February brings some warming, with an average temperature of 6.6°C and maximum values up to 11.4°C, but nights still remain cold, with a minimum of around 1.8°C. Diurnal temperature fluctuations in winter are also noticeable, amounting to approximately 8-9°C, which means that even if it warms up a little during the day, it becomes noticeably cooler by evening. Overall, winters in Milan are cool but not severe, with the possibility of night frosts, especially in January.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Milan is distributed throughout the year, and although there is no clearly defined dry or rainy season here, noticeable fluctuations in amount and frequency are observed between months. Overall, the city receives a moderate amount of rainfall, but some periods stand out for higher humidity, which is important to consider when planning a trip.

The highest amount of precipitation and rainy days usually falls in the spring and autumn months. May is often the wettest month, when an average of 5 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of days with precipitation can reach 17. October is also a wet period with a similar amount of precipitation (5 mm), but with fewer rainy days — about 10. April and November are also characterized by an increased probability of rain: in April about 3 mm of precipitation falls over 11 days, and in November — 4 mm over 11 days. Summer months, such as June, July, and August, despite the warm weather, are also not without rain: with a total precipitation volume of about 4 mm in each, there are between 11 and 14 rainy days. This may indicate periodic, possibly short, but intense summer downpours or thunderstorms.

The least amount of precipitation falls during the winter period. January, February, and December are the "driest" months in terms of total precipitation volume, when only 2 mm falls. February is also distinguished by the fewest rainy days – on average about 6. Considering that minimum temperatures in the winter months (especially in January and December) can drop to marks around 0.2°C - 0.9°C, precipitation during this period can fall not only as light rain or drizzle but also as snow. March is also relatively dry with 3 mm of precipitation and 8 rainy days.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Milan, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. A key element of your gear should be comfortable shoes, as you will be walking a lot while exploring the city. The principle of layering your clothes is your best ally, as the weather in Milan can be changeable. In summer (June-August), when the average temperature holds around 23-25°C, and the maximum reaches 28-29.5°C, you will need light, breathable clothing, headwear, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Despite the heat, do not forget a light jacket or a folding umbrella, as even in the summer months, there are 11-14 rainy days.

In winter (December-February), it is quite cool in Milan: the average temperature ranges from 4.4°C to 6.6°C, and night lows can drop to 0.2°C. Therefore, be sure to take warm outerwear (a coat or jacket), sweaters, a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Given the low temperatures and small amount of precipitation (about 2 mm), which may fall as snow, especially in January, take care to bring warm and preferably waterproof shoes.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with milder but changeable weather. The temperature in spring gradually rises from 9°C in March to 17°C in May, and in autumn it decreases from 19.6°C in September to 8.9°C in November. During these periods, you will find a mid-season jacket, jumpers or cardigans, and closed shoes useful. Do not forget an umbrella, especially if your trip falls in May (up to 17 rainy days, 5 mm of precipitation) or October-November (10-11 rainy days, 4-5 mm of precipitation), when the probability of rain increases.
