General Weather Overview

The climate in Venice, located in Italy, can be described as temperate, with clearly defined seasons. The city experiences warm, and sometimes hot, summers and cool, damp winters. This means that depending on the time of year, your experience of visiting Venice can vary significantly.

The summer months, especially July and August, are the warmest, with average temperatures around 25°C. Winter, from December to February, brings lower temperatures, averaging around 5-7°C, and while frost does occur, severe freezing is rare. Spring and autumn offer pleasant, mild weather, ideal for walking and exploring the city. Rainfall is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year, although May, September, and November may be slightly rainier, judging by the number of days with precipitation.

Temperature

Venice demonstrates notable seasonal temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The hottest months are typically July and August, when the average daily temperature peaks around 25°C, and maximum values can rise to 28-29°C. On the other hand, the coldest month is January, with an average temperature of around 5.2°C, while nighttime lows drop to an average of 2.3°C. Overall, the annual temperature progression shows a smooth transition from cool winters to warm summers, offering diverse conditions for visitors depending on the season.

The summer months in Venice, from June to August, are characterized by warm and often hot weather. Average temperatures during this period range from 22.8°C in June to 25.0°C in August. Daytime highs regularly exceed 26°C, and in July and August can reach 28-29°C. Nights also remain warm, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 19-21°C. This time is ideal for those who love sun and warmth, though it is worth being prepared for the fairly high humidity typical of a coastal city.

The winter period, covering December, January, and February, brings cool weather to Venice. Average temperatures during these months stay in the range of 5.2°C in January to 6.9°C in February. Daytime highs usually do not exceed 8-10°C, and nighttime temperatures can drop to 2-3°C, especially in January. Although severe frosts are rare, the feeling of cold is intensified by the high humidity. The difference between day and night temperatures throughout the year averages about 5-7°C, which is a moderate fluctuation, more noticeable in the transitional seasons and summer than in the height of winter.

Precipitation

In Venice, precipitation is distributed throughout the year, and there is no distinct rainy or dry season. The total amount of rainfall occurring monthly is quite low, suggesting that rains here are more often light or moderate rather than torrential.

In terms of frequency, the highest number of rainy days is observed in May – an average of 14 days, although the total rainfall volume in this month is about 5 mm. Rain also falls relatively frequently in September and November, with approximately 12 rainy days each; however, September sees about 5 mm, and November 4 mm of precipitation. This means that during these periods, the likelihood of encountering rainy weather is higher, but the rains themselves are unlikely to be too intense.

The least rainy months in terms of frequency are January and February, when there are on average only 7 days with precipitation. During these months, as well as in March and July, the least amount of precipitation falls – about 2 mm. Despite this, even in the "driest" periods, a little rain is not excluded. Overall, when planning a trip to Venice, it is worth being prepared for possible precipitation at any time of the year, although its intensity is generally low.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Venice, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. Given the peculiarities of the local climate, the main rule is layering. Even in the warm months, the evening breeze from the lagoon can be cool, and in winter, layers of clothing will help retain heat. An indispensable item in your suitcase will be comfortable shoes, as people move around Venice mainly on foot, exploring its narrow streets and numerous bridges. Do not forget an umbrella or a light raincoat – although the monthly rainfall is low, rainy days happen year-round, especially in May, September, and November.

In summer (June-August), when the average temperature hovers around 22-25°C, and the maximum can reach 28-29°C, opt for light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen will be your best companions. For evening walks or visiting churches, where covering shoulders and knees is required, a light cardigan or stole will come in handy. In the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) months, the weather is more changeable. Days can be pleasantly warm (average temperatures from 9°C in March to 20°C in September), but evenings and mornings can be cool. Bring jeans or trousers, long and short-sleeved t-shirts, a sweater or fleece jacket, and a mid-season jacket.

In winter (December-February), it is quite cool in Venice; the average temperature fluctuates around 5-7°C, and at night can drop to 2-3°C. You will need a warm jacket or coat, sweaters, a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Given the high humidity, the sensation of cold can be stronger. It is also worth thinking about waterproof footwear, as in winter the likelihood of "acqua alta" (high water) increases, although the city provides special walkways for this eventuality. Regardless of the season, an elegant scarf can serve not only as protection against the chill but also as a stylish accessory appropriate for the Italian atmosphere.
