General Weather Overview

The climate in Shizuoka, located in Japan, can be described as temperate and humid, with four distinct seasons. The city enjoys relatively mild weather year-round, although with noticeable fluctuations in temperature and precipitation depending on the season. This makes Shizuoka an attractive destination to visit in almost any month, allowing you to choose the most comfortable conditions for your trip.

Summer in Shizuoka (June to August) is usually warm and humid, with average temperatures reaching 26.2°C in August. This period is also characterized by the highest amount of rainfall and rainy days, especially in June and July, indicating a distinct rainy season. Winters (December to February) are quite mild here, with an average January temperature of about 5.5°C, and rainfall is significantly lower than in summer. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures and moderate rainfall, making them the ideal time for walking and exploring the surroundings.

Temperature

The annual temperature trend in Shizuoka demonstrates a comfortable climate without extreme peaks, making the city pleasant to visit at any time of the year. The hottest month is traditionally August, when the average air temperature is 26.2°C, and daily highs often reach 29.0°C. On the other hand, the coldest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of about 5.5°C and minimum night readings dropping to 2.1°C. Overall, the annual temperature range is quite moderate, without sharp spikes.

The summer months in Shizuoka, from June to August, bring warm weather, ideally suited for outdoor activities and walks. Average daily temperatures during this period confidently exceed 20°C, reaching their peak in August (average temperature 26.2°C, maximum around 29.0°C). Winter, lasting from December to February, is quite mild in Shizuoka. Average temperatures fluctuate from 5.5°C in January to 7.3°C in December. Although night temperatures can drop to 2-3°C, especially in January (down to 2.1°C), strong and prolonged frosts are uncharacteristic for this region. Notably, the difference between day and night temperatures is noticeable throughout the year, averaging between 5°C and 8°C. This means that even after hot summer days, evenings can bring pleasant coolness, and in the transitional seasons and winter, it is advisable to have an extra layer of clothing for evening walks.

Precipitation

In Shizuoka, there is distinct seasonality in precipitation, with a clearly defined wet period occurring during the summer months. The peak of rains falls on June, July, August, and September. The highest amount of precipitation in millimetres usually falls in July (on average 13 mm), making it the wettest month by volume. However, in terms of rain frequency, August leads, when it rains on average 23 days a month. In June and September, one should also expect a significant number of rainy days – 20 and 22 days respectively, with total precipitation around 12 mm and 10 mm.

The driest months in Shizuoka are December and January, when only about 2 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days is minimal – 6 days in December and 8 in January. Spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November) act as transitional seasons. At this time, the amount of precipitation and rainy days gradually increases in spring (for example, in May already 9 mm of precipitation and 16 rainy days) and decreases in autumn (in October – 8 mm and 17 rainy days). Thus, although summer is the rainiest, precipitation in Shizuoka is possible year-round, but with varying intensity and frequency. Given that even in the coldest months minimum temperatures remain above freezing, precipitation predominantly falls as rain.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Shizuoka, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, considering the distinct change of seasons and significant amount of rainfall, especially in the summer months. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes will be your best companion, as the city and its surroundings are perfect for long walks. The principle of layering in clothing will also be very handy, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

In summer (June-August), Shizuoka is warm and very humid, so choose light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. Be sure to take an umbrella or a light raincoat, as this is the period with the highest amount of rainfall (up to 23 rainy days in August). Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is more moderate, but rains are still possible. You will need t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, a light jacket, or a sweater. In early spring and late autumn, it can be cool, especially in the evenings, so it is worth bringing warmer outerwear.

In winter (December-February), Shizuoka is relatively mild, but the temperature can drop to 2-3°C, especially at night. Take care of warm clothing: sweaters, a fleece jacket, a warm jacket or coat, as well as a hat, a scarf, and gloves will be useful. Although there is significantly less precipitation during this period than in summer, a light waterproof layer or umbrella may still come in handy. In general, for a comfortable trip to Shizuoka at any time of year, it is recommended to have at least one set of rain gear and several layers of clothing to regulate warmth depending on the weather and time of day.
