The complex combines a memorial apartment with authentic interiors and a modern museum space. Here, visitors can see authentic household items, an extensive library of 5,000 books, and the famous collection of 450 lighters that the owner collected over many years. The special atmosphere of the place allows one to feel the modesty and the scale of Dinmukhamed Akhmedovich's personality.

The museum is housed in a historic building that combines features of the Verny era and Kazakh national traditions. What to Do

At the D. Kunayev House-Museum, visitors can literally touch history by exploring the rooms of the memorial apartment. Take a close look at the crystal vases and porcelain sets in the living room — they create a cozy atmosphere characteristic of receptions from that era. Be sure to visit the study, which preserves a library with rare editions reflecting the scientific and personal interests of the owner.

In the halls of the main museum, pay attention to the multimedia stands that tell the story of diplomatic successes and the construction of iconic Almaty landmarks. One of the brightest highlights of the exhibition is Kunayev's unique collection of personal lighters — each with its own story. Visiting the video zone will allow you to see archival footage that brings the pages of this outstanding man's biography to life and helps to better understand the historical context of his work.

Getting There

The House-Museum is located in the historical center of Almaty, at the cozy intersection of Tulebaev and Karasay Batyr streets. This area is characterized by the special atmosphere of the old city, so a walk on foot to the museum will be a separate pleasure. You can get here by buses or trolleybuses that stop on the neighboring busy avenues.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the life of Dinmukhamed Akhmedovich Kunayev, who lived in this apartment from 1969 to 1993. The main museum building is noteworthy: in the 1980s, an old Inn was completely reconstructed by the architect Zh. Shaikenov. The master managed to harmoniously combine Verny architecture with traditional Kazakh decorative elements.

The museum itself opened its doors on January 12, 2002, marking the 90th anniversary of the great politician. The exhibition was created with the active participation of Kunayev's relatives and associates, who donated his personal archives, rare photographs, and unique video materials to the fund. In 2012, the complex expanded by including the memorial apartment located in the neighboring building.

In 2022, for the statesman's 110th anniversary, the museum underwent a major re-exposition. Classic display cases were supplemented with multimedia zones, which allowed for a more visual presentation of Kunayev's contribution to the development of science, culture, and the architectural appearance of Kazakhstan, making the museum interesting for tourists of all ages.

Time Needed

For a full exploration of the main exhibition and the memorial apartment, most tourists need from 1.5 to 2 hours. This time will allow you to take your time studying archival documents and carefully examine the interior details that recreate the spirit of a bygone era.
