General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Osh can be characterised as continental, with distinct seasons. Thanks to its southern location, it is generally warmer here than in the northern parts of the country. The weather is quite comfortable for travel during most of the year, offering tourists a variety of conditions from hot sun to refreshing coolness.

Summer here is hot and arid: in July and August, the average temperature holds around +25°C, and daily maximums often exceed +30°C. Precipitation is minimal during this time, guaranteeing clear skies. Winter is moderately cold but not severe, with average temperatures just below freezing and rare snowfall, which does not create serious obstacles for sightseeing.

The highest amount of precipitation falls during the spring period, especially in March and April, when up to 15 rainy days per month are observed. This is a time of vibrant blooming and freshness. Autumn, particularly September and early October, is considered the "velvet season" with pleasant warmth and a gradual transition to winter coolness.

Temperature

The climatic conditions in which Osh is located are distinguished by significant contrasts throughout the year. The coldest month is traditionally January with an average temperature of about -1.1°C and night frosts down to -6.2°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in July, when average figures reach +25.0°C, making the middle of summer the hottest period for travelling to this region.

The summer season is characterised by dry and hot weather. During the day in July and August, the air often warms up to +30...+32°C; however, thanks to low humidity and minimal rainfall, high temperatures are tolerated quite easily. A characteristic feature of the local climate is noticeable daily fluctuations: even in the height of summer, a hot day is followed by refreshing night coolness, when the thermometer drops to +16...+18°C.

Winter here is moderately cool and mild, and severe frosts happen rarely. While daytime temperatures in December and January often stay in the positive range (up to +3.9...+4.7°C), nights are consistently frosty. Spring arrives rapidly: already in April, average daily maximums reach a comfortable +18.9°C, making the off-season an excellent time for excursions.

Precipitation

The climate in the city of Osh is characterised by a moderate amount of precipitation, which is distributed unevenly across seasons. In winter, when the average daily temperature drops below freezing, snow usually falls here. In December and January, about 7 days with precipitation are recorded, however, their total volume remains small, so heavy snowfalls occur infrequently.

The highest frequency of precipitation is observed in spring. March and April are the "wettest" months in terms of inclement days: in March, rains can occur up to 15 days, and in April — about 14. Travellers planning a trip to Kyrgyzstan at this time should take an umbrella or raincoat with them, although the precipitation itself, judging by statistics, is not distinguished by high intensity.

Summer brings a gradual decrease in humidity. While rains are still possible in June (about 10 days), the driest weather sets in by the end of the season. August is the record holder for the number of clear days — precipitation falls on average only 3 days per month. Autumn begins with a comfortable September, but by October and November, the frequency of rains increases again, heralding the approach of winter.

What to Pack

When preparing for a trip to Osh, it is important to consider the distinct seasonality of the local climate. Summer here is hot and dry, with temperatures often exceeding +30°C, so you will definitely need light clothes made of natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Do not forget reliable sun protection: a head covering, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with high SPF will be indispensable in July and August. In winter, the picture changes: temperatures drop below freezing, especially at night, so a warm down jacket, scarf, and gloves will become the foundation of your wardrobe.

Spring, especially March and April, is the wettest period of the year, when rains can occur up to 15 days a month. During this time, as well as in cool autumn, it is highly recommended to use the principle of layering in clothing. A combination of a t-shirt, fleece sweater, and windproof jacket will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Be sure to bring a compact umbrella or raincoat so that sudden precipitation does not catch you by surprise.

Pay special attention to footwear, as Kyrgyzstan encourages long walking tours. For exploring city attractions and climbing the Sulaiman-Too mountain, comfortable, broken-in sneakers or light trekking boots with non-slip soles are ideal. If your journey falls during the winter months, choose insulated and water-resistant footwear to feel comfortable even at sub-zero temperatures.
