General Weather Overview

The climate of Vilnius can be described as humid continental, with clearly defined seasons. Here, you can expect noticeable temperature fluctuations between summer and winter, making each season unique for visiting in its own way.

Summer in Vilnius is generally warm and pleasant, with average temperatures in July and August around 18.4°C, while maximum values can reach 22-23°C. Winters, on the other hand, are cold and snowy, with average temperatures in January and February below freezing (-2.6°C and -1.7°C respectively), and frosts dropping to -4°C and below. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with milder but changeable weather.

Regarding precipitation, it is distributed quite evenly throughout the year, averaging from 1 to 3 mm per month, while the number of rainy days ranges from 10 to 16 per month. This means that a little rain is possible at any time of the year, so it is always useful to have an umbrella or raincoat with you, especially if you plan long walks through the charming streets of Vilnius.

Temperature

The annual temperature cycle in Vilnius demonstrates a distinct change of seasons, offering visitors to the city a variety of climatic experiences. The coldest months are traditionally January, with an average temperature of around -2.6°C (minimums can drop to -4.6°C, while maximums rarely exceed -0.6°C), and February, where the thermometer hovers on average around the -1.7°C mark (with night-time lows down to -4.2°C and daytime highs around 0.8°C). In contrast, the peak of warmth occurs in July and August: the average temperature in these months is a comfortable 18.4°C. Daytime highs in August can reach 22.9°C, and in July 22.6°C, while night-time lows stay in the region of 13.9°C - 14.2°C.

Summer in Vilnius is usually pleasantly warm and conducive to long walks and sightseeing. In June, July, and August, daytime maximum temperatures most often fluctuate in the range of 22.5°C to 22.9°C, providing comfortable conditions for active leisure. Nights bring refreshing coolness: minimum temperatures drop to 12.7°C in June and to 14.2°C in July. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer is palpable, averaging 8-10 degrees. This allows you to enjoy the warmth during the day and sleep in comfortable coolness at night.

Winter in the Lithuanian capital is characterized by frosty weather, often accompanied by snowfall, which gives the city a special, fairytale charm. In December, January, and February, average temperatures steadily stay below zero: around -0.8°C in December, -2.6°C in January, and -1.7°C in February. Night frosts are a common occurrence, with minimum temperatures reaching -4.6°C in January. During the daytime, the air temperature often hovers around -0.6°C (in January) or rises slightly above freezing (up to 0.8°C in February and December). Diurnal temperature fluctuations in winter are less pronounced than in summer, but the sensation of cold can be intensified by high humidity, which is indirectly indicated by the large number of days with precipitation during the winter months.

Precipitation

When planning a trip to Vilnius, it is worth noting that precipitation here is a fairly frequent occurrence, but usually not too heavy. The city does not have a clearly defined rainy season or dry period, and monthly precipitation fluctuates between 1 mm and 3 mm. This means that light rain or snow can fall at any time of the year, but they are rarely strong enough to seriously disrupt your plans.

If we talk about the "wettest" months, in terms of the amount of precipitation, these are July and August, when about 3 mm is registered. However, in terms of the frequency of days with precipitation, the winter months lead: January and December, each counting on average 16 days with some form of precipitation. Precipitation also happens quite often in October (about 14 days). The "driest" month both in terms of amount (1 mm) and number of days with precipitation (10 days, on par with September) is March.

The nature of precipitation in Vilnius changes depending on the season. In winter, from December to February, when temperatures drop below freezing, precipitation most often falls as snow, covering the city in a white blanket and creating a fairytale atmosphere. In the spring, summer, and autumn months, it is predominantly rain. Given the overall small amount of rainfall in millimetres, it is safe to assume that this refers more to light or moderate showers rather than torrential downpours, making walks around the city quite comfortable even on "wet" days.

What to Pack

When packing for Vilnius, it is important to consider its changeable weather and be prepared for any surprises. Regardless of the season, the key principle when packing your suitcase should be layering. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes for walking on the cobbled streets of the Old Town. Given that the number of days with precipitation ranges from 10 to 16 per month, a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will become your faithful companions on any trip.

If your journey is planned for the winter months (December-February), when the average temperature drops below freezing (from -0.6°C to -4.6°C), you will need warm outerwear (a down jacket or winter coat), a hat, a scarf, gloves, and warm, preferably waterproof, boots. Thermal underwear and warm sweaters will not go amiss. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather can be quite variable: from cool (average temperature in March +1.6°C, in November +3.0°C) to moderately warm (in May +12.2°C, in September +13.8°C). In these seasons, it is worth taking a demi-season jacket, sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, as well as waterproof shoes. Do not forget a scarf and headwear for protection against the wind.

Summer in Vilnius (June-August) is usually warm, with average temperatures around +18°C and maximum values up to +22-23°C. You will find light t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and sundresses useful. However, even in summer, evenings can be cool, and rain is also possible (especially in July and August, when up to 3 mm of precipitation falls), so a light jacket, cardigan, or jumper will not be redundant. Sunscreen and a hat will also come in handy for sunny days. Regardless of the season, remember the principle of layering – it will help you feel comfortable in any weather in beautiful Vilnius.
