General Weather Overview

The climate in Tolagnaro can be described as warm and humid, with tropical features. Thanks to its coastal location, the area does not experience the extreme heat typical of other regions, and ocean breezes bring a pleasant freshness. The weather in this part of Madagascar is characterised by its mildness, making travel comfortable at almost any time of the year, although tourists should be prepared for frequent variable cloudiness and rainfall.

Two main seasons can be distinguished throughout the year. The period from November to April is considered the warmest: the average temperature holds at around +24…+25°C, although this is also the peak time for rainy days, especially in January. From May to October, a cooler and relatively dry season sets in, when the air warms up to an average of +20…+22°C, and the number of days with precipitation decreases significantly, making this a popular time to visit.

A notable feature of the weather in Tolagnaro is the stability of the temperature regime: there are no sharp fluctuations between seasons. Even during the "coldest" months, such as July, the temperature rarely drops below +16°C at night. Although rains occur year-round, in the dry season they are short-lived and are quickly replaced by sunshine, allowing you to enjoy walks and nature.

Temperature

The climate in Tolagnaro delights travellers with its mildness and lack of extreme fluctuations, making this city in the south-east of Madagascar an attractive destination almost all year round. The warmest period falls during the Southern Hemisphere summer months — from December to February. During this time, the air warms up to an average of +25°C, with daytime highs reaching a comfortable +28…+29°C. This time is ideal for those who enjoy warmth but wish to avoid exhausting tropical heat.

With the arrival of the local "winter," which lasts from June to August, it becomes fresher, but the weather remains very pleasant for tourists. The average temperature during this period drops to +19…+20°C. July and June typically become the coolest months: during the day, the air warms up to +23°C, while at night the thermometer may drop to +16°C. Such mild weather is excellent for active walks and long excursions, as the heat is not tiring.

Daily temperature fluctuations in the region are moderate and predictable. The difference between day and night readings is usually about 6–8 degrees, allowing the body to adapt easily. Even in the hottest months, nights bring refreshing coolness (around +22°C), and in the cool season, a light jacket or jumper may be useful for evening strolls.

Precipitation

The nature of precipitation in Tolagnaro has its own unique features: rain is frequent here, but its intensity is generally low. Instead of the powerful tropical downpours typical of other parts of the island, light drizzle or short-term rainfall prevails in this region. Thanks to this, even on cloudy days, the weather rarely interferes with travellers' plans.

The wettest period falls during the Southern Hemisphere summer months — from December to March. The "rainiest" month in terms of frequency is January, when about 22 days with precipitation are recorded. However, considering the extremely small total volume of falling moisture (only about 6 mm), it can be said that the rains at this time are nominal in character, merely slightly refreshing the air.

The relatively dry season lasts from May to October. During this period, the frequency of rains decreases noticeably. The driest months are considered to be August and September, when the number of days with precipitation falls to 7–8 per month. This time of year is excellent for those who prefer more stable and clear weather for walks along the coast and the surrounding areas.

What to Pack

When preparing for a trip to Tolagnaro, prioritise light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. During the warm months (from November to April), you will need t-shirts, shorts, and light trousers. Since the sun in Madagascar can be very strong, be sure to pack a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high SPF protection factor.

The weather in this coastal region can be changeable, so the principle of layering will be very useful. During the "winter" period (from June to August), temperatures in the evenings can drop to +16°C, so a light fleece jacket, jumper, or hoodie is essential. Additionally, the city is known for its winds, so a windbreaker will become your best friend. Given the high humidity and frequent precipitation at the beginning of the year (January-March), it is worth taking a compact umbrella or a reliable raincoat with you.

For long walks and excursions, choose comfortable closed footwear, such as broken-in sneakers or trainers with non-slip soles. Sandals will come in handy for relaxing on the beach or short outings. Do not forget swimwear, as well as repellents to protect yourself from insects that may be active in humid weather.
