General Weather Overview

The climate of Rodrigues can be described as mild tropical, with comfortable weather conditions throughout the year. Thanks to the oceanic influence, there is no oppressive heat here, and the temperature patterns are remarkably stable. This makes the island an attractive destination for travellers regardless of the season.

Two main periods can be traced during the year. The warmest months occur at the beginning of the year (January–March), when the average temperature reaches 27°C. This time is also characterised by a higher number of rainy days, although their intensity is low. From June to September, it becomes slightly cooler: the air warms up to an average of 23°C, and the number of wet days noticeably decreases, giving way to drier weather.

A notable feature of the local climate is that even during periods of frequent rainfall, the total volume remains minimal. This means that rains are usually short-lived and rarely prolonged. Even air temperatures without sharp fluctuations create ideal conditions for those seeking a relaxing holiday without climatic surprises.

Temperature

The climate on Rodrigues Island is distinguished by remarkable stability and mildness, offering tourists comfortable conditions almost all year round. The hottest period here falls at the beginning of the calendar year: in February and March, the average air temperature holds at 26.9°C, while daily highs reach 27.7°C. This is the time of true tropical summer, when the sun warms the air and ocean, creating ideal conditions for beach holidays and water activities.

With the arrival of the Southern Hemisphere "winter", which lasts from June to September, the heat subsides slightly, giving way to pleasant freshness. The coolest month of the year is August, with an average temperature of about 22.6°C. It does not get cold in the usual sense of the word during this period: the weather remains warm and conducive to walking, hiking, and exploring natural attractions without the risk of overheating under the scorching sun.

An interesting feature of the local climate is the surprisingly small range of temperature fluctuations. The difference between day and night figures is minimal here and, according to statistics, often does not exceed one or two degrees. This means that there are practically no sharp temperature drops on Rodrigues: evenings and nights remain as warm and comfortable as the daytime hours, allowing you to enjoy outdoor recreation at any time of day.

Precipitation

Precipitation on Rodrigues Island has a distinct seasonality, although rain falls quite regularly throughout the year. The wettest period is at the beginning of the year: the highest number of rainy days is observed from January to April. The peak occurs in March, when up to 23 days with precipitation and the highest volume of moisture (about 8 mm) are recorded, which is worth considering when planning active holidays.

A drier season begins in May and lasts until roughly November. During this time, the intensity and frequency of rains decrease noticeably. The "driest" months are September and October, when the number of rainy days drops to 10–11 per month, and the average rainfall is only about 1 mm. This time is excellent for those who prefer more stable weather.

The nature of rainfall on Rodrigues is typically tropical: even in the rainy season, showers can be short-lived and quickly replaced by clear skies. In the winter months for the Southern Hemisphere (June–August), rains occur less frequently, about 12–15 days a month, but often manifest as a light drizzle that brings freshness but rarely interferes with walks.

What to Pack

When packing for Rodrigues, opt for light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen, as the average temperature here is comfortable year-round, ranging from +22°C to +27°C. Shorts, t-shirts, and summer dresses will form the basis of your wardrobe, but do not forget reliable sun protection. High SPF cream, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are mandatory, as UV radiation is active here even on cloudy days.

Particular attention should be paid to protection from the wind, which is characteristic of the island, especially from June to September when the temperature drops slightly. For evening walks and sea excursions, be sure to pack a light windbreaker, hoodie, or cardigan — the principle of layering is very relevant here. Given that the number of rainy days can be significant (especially at the beginning of the year), a compact raincoat will be much more practical than an umbrella, which might break from wind gusts.

To comfortably explore the island's natural beauty, you will need comfortable footwear: sturdy sandals or worn-in trainers are perfect for walking routes over hilly terrain. If you plan to swim at wild beaches, it is recommended to bring special aqua shoes (coral slippers) to protect your feet from sharp stones and corals when entering the water.
