General Weather Overview

The climate in Chihuahua, located in the northern part of Mexico, is characterized as arid or semi-arid. This means that dry weather prevails here with a large number of sunny days throughout the year and significant temperature fluctuations both between day and night, and between seasons. Prepare for dry air and intense sunshine.

Two main seasons can be distinguished in Chihuahua. Summer, lasting approximately from May to September, is hot and sunny, with average temperatures often exceeding 25°C, and maximums reaching 30-34°C. Winter, from December to February, is cool, with average temperatures around 10-12°C, while night-time temperatures can drop close to freezing or even lower. Spring and autumn are transitional periods with more moderate and comfortable temperatures.

Precipitation in Chihuahua is extremely insignificant throughout the year. Most of the time it is very dry here. A slight increase in rainfall is observed during the summer months, from July to September; however, even during this period, rains are rare and short-lived, bringing no significant relief from the dryness. Therefore, when planning a trip, it is worth counting on predominantly clear and dry weather, regardless of the season.

Temperature

The climate in Chihuahua, located in Mexico, is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, as well as a noticeable difference between day and night temperatures. The annual temperature progression shows clearly defined seasons. The hottest month is usually June, when the average temperature reaches 26.8°C, and daytime maximums can rise to 33.8°C. Conversely, the coldest month is January with an average temperature of 10.4°C and average minimum temperatures around 2.4°C, indicating cool nights.

The summer months in Chihuahua, especially from May to August, bring hot weather. In May, the average maximum temperature is 31.6°C, and in June, it is an impressive 33.8°C. Even in July and August, daytime temperatures consistently stay above 30°C. Summer nights bring some relief: minimum temperatures drop to 15-20°C. It is worth noting that despite the heat, rainfall in early summer (May, June) is minimal, indicating a dry heat. In July and August, the number of days with precipitation increases, but the total amount of rainfall remains low.

Winter in Chihuahua, from December to February, offers mild and cool days, but quite cold nights. In January, the coldest month, the average minimum temperature drops to 2.4°C, which is close to the freezing point. During the day, however, the air temperature can warm up to 18-20°C, creating comfortable conditions. A characteristic feature of the climate in Chihuahua throughout the year is the large difference between day and night temperatures, often exceeding 15°C, which is especially noticeable in the winter and spring months.

Precipitation

In the city of Chihuahua, there is a very clear division of the year into dry and wet seasons, although the total amount of precipitation throughout the year is small. Most of the year is characterized by minimal rainfall.

The dry season in Chihuahua lasts for most of the year. From November to May, rainfall tends towards zero (0 mm), and the number of days with precipitation ranges from one to two per month. January, March, and April are particularly arid, with only one wet day on average.

The summer months bring some increase in rainfall, forming a short wet season. The highest amount of precipitation falls from July to September, when 2 mm of rainfall is recorded per month. The frequency of rainy days also increases during these months: in August and September, there are on average 10 days with precipitation. June and October are transitional months, with 1 mm of precipitation and 4-5 rainy days respectively. Given the temperature regime, precipitation falls predominantly in the form of rain.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Chihuahua, it is important to consider the significant temperature fluctuations during the day and the generally dry climate. Regardless of the time of year, the main recommendation would be layered clothing. This will allow you to feel comfortable both in the cool morning and evening hours, and during the warmer daytime. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes for walking around the city. Given the large number of sunny days, do not forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, especially in the summer months.

In the summer months, roughly from May to September, when the average temperature ranges from 23°C to 27°C, and the maximum can reach 31-34°C, preference should be given to light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. Although the total amount of precipitation in Chihuahua is small, a slight increase in the number of days with precipitation is observed from June to September (up to 10 days per month, but with a total volume of only 1-2 mm). Therefore, a light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella may be useful in case of a short rain. In winter, from December to February, daytime temperatures are more moderate (averaging 10-12°C), but nights and early mornings can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to 2-4°C. During this period, you will need warm clothes: sweaters, a fleece jacket, a mid-season or winter jacket, and possibly a hat and gloves.

In spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November), the weather in Chihuahua is usually very pleasant, with warm days and cool evenings. Average temperatures during these periods vary from 15°C to 20°C. At this time, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, light jumpers, jeans or trousers, as well as a light jacket or windbreaker for the evening, are ideal. The principle of layering remains relevant in these seasons as well, allowing you to easily adapt to the changing temperature throughout the day.
