General Weather Overview

The climate in Poza Rica can be described as tropical, with warm weather prevailing throughout the year. There is practically no severe cold here: even in the coolest months, such as January and December, the average temperature stays at a comfortable level of around 20°C. This makes the city an excellent place for those who prefer to avoid low temperatures.

In the city's weather calendar, seasonal changes are clearly traced, related not so much to cold as to precipitation. Spring, especially April and May, brings peak heat, when daytime temperatures often exceed 30°C. From June to October, a distinct rainy season sets in: the number of days with precipitation during this period increases sharply, reaching a maximum in August and September.

For tourists, this means that winter and early spring are the most favourable times to visit if you want to catch more sunny days and moderate warmth. Summer months, although they remain hot, require readiness for frequent rains. Nevertheless, the temperature regime in Poza Rica remains stable, ensuring a warm welcome to travellers in any season.

Temperature

Poza Rica welcomes travellers with a warm climate throughout the year, where the concept of "cold" is practically absent. The temperature regime here varies from pleasant warmth in winter to intense heat in late spring. The hottest month is traditionally May, when the average temperature reaches 28.6°C, and the daily maximum often rises to 33.0°C. The "coolest" time of the year is considered to be January, however even then average figures hold at a comfortable mark of about 20.0°C.

The summer period and the end of spring are characterised by stable high temperatures. Already in April, the air warms up during the day to an average of 30.7°C. In summer, from June to August, the heat persists: daily maximums fluctuate around 31–32°C, and nights remain very warm, practically tropical, with a temperature of about 24°C. Travellers should be prepared for the fact that in the summer months the heat feels quite intense, especially taking into account seasonal precipitation.

Winter in this region of Mexico is distinguished by exceptional mildness. In December and January, the daytime temperature is a pleasant 23–25°C, which creates ideal conditions for excursions and walks without exhausting heat. At this time of year, a noticeable contrast is observed between daytime warmth and night-time freshness: after sunset, the temperature can drop to 16–17°C. Such a drop allows for comfortable rest at night, enjoying the coolness after a sunny day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Poza Rica is distributed unevenly throughout the year, which is characteristic of the tropical climate of this region of Mexico. Here, one can distinguish a distinct rainy season and a drier period, so it is important to take these seasonal fluctuations into account when planning a trip. It never snows here, and all precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rain.

The wettest period begins in June and continues until October. During this time, it rains very often: for example, in July and August, the number of rainy days reaches a maximum — from 25 to 27 days per month. September and October are also distinguished by high humidity and bring the greatest volume of precipitation. In the summer months, downpours can be frequent, but they often bring welcome coolness.

A drier and more stable season lasts from late autumn to mid-spring. In winter and in March, the intensity of precipitation decreases noticeably. The driest months can be called December and March, when the minimum amount of moisture falls, and the number of rainy days is reduced to 8–9 per month. This time is considered the most favourable for long walks and open-air excursions.

What to Pack

Poza Rica is characterised by a warm and often hot climate year-round, so the basis of your luggage should consist of light items made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. This is especially relevant for the spring and summer months, when the daytime temperature consistently stays around 30°C and above. Do not forget to bring reliable sun protection: headwear, sunglasses, and cream with a high SPF level, as solar activity here is high even on cloudy days.

When packing, it is important to consider the seasonality of precipitation. From June to October, the greatest number of rainy days is observed, so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be simply necessary. In the winter months (from December to February) and in the evenings, the temperature can drop to 16–17°C. For such cases, as well as for protection from the wind, it is recommended to use the principle of layering: bring a light jacket, windbreaker, or hoodie that can be thrown over a t-shirt. Comfortable walking shoes are also mandatory for getting to know the city comfortably.
