General Weather Overview
The climate in Tampico, located in Mexico, is characterised as hot and very dry tropical, with distinctly warm weather throughout the year. Average annual temperatures fluctuate slightly, remaining comfortable for visiting in any season if you tolerate heat well. Winters here are mild and exceptionally dry, while summers are very hot and characterised by an increase in the frequency of rainfall, although the total amount remains low.
The most notable feature of the Tampico climate is the extremely low rainfall level year-round. From January to May, precipitation is minimal, amounting to just 1-2 mm per month, with the number of days with recorded precipitation ranging from 4 to 9. From June to October comes a period with a slight increase in rainfall. During these months, the amount can reach 3-5 mm, and the number of days with precipitation increases to 16-20 per month, especially in July, August, and September. It is important to note that even during this period, the total amount of falling moisture remains very small. Air temperatures in summer reach their maximum values, often exceeding 30°C.
Thus, when planning a trip to Tampico, it is worth considering that from late spring to mid-autumn, the weather will be very hot, with a slight increase in the likelihood of minor rainfall, which, however, may be more frequent. From November to April, drier and moderately warm weather awaits you. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are not too great, making the city attractive to visit almost all year round, especially for those who prefer a hot and arid climate.
Temperature
A warm climate is observed in Tampico throughout the year. The annual temperature range is quite comfortable, without extreme cold. The hottest months are May, June, July, and August, when the average maximum temperature holds steadily around 32.0°C, and the average monthly temperature reaches 28.8°C - 29.1°C. The coolest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of 20.6°C, while the average minimum temperature drops to 17.6°C, and the daytime maximum is about 23.5°C.
The summer period in Tampico, especially from June to September, is characterised by high temperatures and, judging by the number of days with precipitation, increased humidity. Daytime highs often exceed 31°C, and nights remain very warm, with average minimum temperatures around 26°C. Winter, on the contrary, is mild and pleasant. In months such as December, January, and February, average daytime temperatures fluctuate around 23-25°C, and night-time temperatures drop to 17-18°C, creating comfortable conditions for staying.
Temperature fluctuations between day and night readings in Tampico are moderate throughout the year. The difference between the average maximum and average minimum temperature is usually about 5-7 degrees. For example, in January the difference is approximately 5.9°C (23.5°C max. and 17.6°C min.), and in August – about 5.8°C (32.0°C max. and 26.2°C min.). This means that nights bring some relief from the daytime heat in summer but do not lead to a sharp cooling in winter.
Precipitation
In Tampico, distinct seasonality in the distribution of precipitation is observed throughout the year. The city experiences a distinct wet season, followed by a drier period. Given the climatic conditions of Mexico in this region, all precipitation falls in the form of rain; snow is not characteristic here.
The wet season in Tampico usually falls on the period from June to October. At this time, both the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days increase. The highest probability of rain is observed in September, which is the wettest month both in terms of rainfall volume (on average 5 mm) and frequency – about 20 rainy days. July is also distinguished by a high frequency of rains (approximately 19 days), and in June and August, it rains on average 18 days a month. The nature of precipitation during this period is more likely frequent but not always heavy rains.
The dry season covers the months from November to May. At this time, the amount of precipitation is minimal. February, March, April, May, November, and December are the driest, with an average rainfall of just 1 mm per month. The number of rainy days also decreases significantly: for example, in February there are only about 4, in March – about 5. In general, during these months, rains are rare and, as a rule, short-lived.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Tampico, it is important to consider its warm climate, which, despite general dryness, has a season with more frequent rainfall and increased humidity. Warm weather prevails throughout the year, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Do not forget sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection, especially in the period from April to September when temperatures reach their maximum. Comfortable walking shoes will become your indispensable companion for exploring the city.
Although there is no clearly defined winter in Tampico, in the period from December to February, average temperatures drop slightly, especially in the evenings and mornings (minimum temperatures around 17-18°C). At this time, a light jacket, cardigan, or sweater will come in handy. From June to October, the number of days with precipitation increases, although their total amount is small. For this period, it is worth taking a light raincoat or a compact umbrella to be ready for possible short-term rains. The principle of layering in clothing will be useful, allowing you to adapt to temperature changes during the day or when visiting air-conditioned premises.
Regardless of the season, do not forget insect repellent, especially if you plan walks in the evening or near bodies of water. For a beach holiday or visiting the pool, of course, you will need swimwear. In general, a relaxed style of clothing is suitable for Tampico, however, for visiting some restaurants or cultural events, a more formal outfit may be required.
