Current Weather

Planning a trip to Khenifra? In this section, you'll find the most up-to-date weather information and detailed forecasts to help you perfectly prepare for your journey through Morocco.

Overview

The climate in Khenifra is a harmonious blend of Mediterranean and continental types, typical for the inland regions of Morocco. The city is nestled in the Middle Atlas mountain range at an altitude of about 800–900 meters above sea level. This geographical location provides the region with fresher air compared to the coastal plains, but also results in noticeable daily temperature fluctuations.

All four seasons are clearly defined throughout the year. Winter in Khenifra is usually cool and wet, while summer is characterized by hot and dry weather. The transitional seasons—spring and autumn—are considered the most comfortable for tourists, offering moderate warmth and the picturesque scenery of the Atlas Mountains awakening or settling into dormancy.

The general climate is characterized as moderate continental, with clear, sunny weather prevailing during the summer. Annual precipitation ranges between 500–700 mm, most of which falls from November to March. Summer here is practically rain-free, making it exceptionally sunny, though it requires protection from strong UV radiation.

Temperature

The temperature profile of Khenifra reflects a dynamic typical of mountain regions. The annual temperature range is quite wide, from a brisk +2°C on winter nights to a hot +37°C at the height of summer. The coldest months are January and February, when average daytime temperatures hover around +15°C, and at night, the air cools to minimum values, sometimes reaching the freezing point.

Summer in the city arrives rapidly. The heat peaks in July and August, when daytime temperatures consistently exceed +30°C and reach as high as +36.7°C on especially sunny days. Despite the daytime heat, the nights bring welcome relief—thanks to the altitude, temperatures drop to a comfortable +19°C...+20°C. These daily fluctuations (up to 15 degrees) are a hallmark of Khenifra's climate.

Transitional periods, such as April and October, offer the most stable and pleasant weather. During these months, daytime temperatures usually settle around +21°C...+26°C, creating ideal conditions for walking and sightseeing in Morocco without the risk of overheating or catching a chill.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Khenifra is distributed very unevenly throughout the year, forming distinct wet and dry seasons. Most rain falls during the winter and spring periods. March is considered the wettest month, with rainfall reaching 92 mm and rainy weather persisting for up to 11 days per month. During this time, light drizzle may alternate with more intense downpours.

The summer period in this region of Morocco is characterized by extreme dryness. In July and August, rain is a rarity, and total precipitation for these months seldom exceeds 10–12 mm. Due to the mountainous terrain, occasional snowfall is possible in the city during January and February; however, snow cover in Khenifra itself doesn't last long—usually no more than a few days a year.

Air humidity fluctuates significantly: while it can reach 80–90% in winter, creating a chillier feel, the air becomes very dry (30–50%) in summer, which helps make the daytime heat more tolerable. Travelers should note that peak rainfall can also occur in November, when the city is often covered by steady autumn cyclones.

Packing Tips

When packing for Khenifra in the summer months (June–August), be sure to bring light clothing made of natural fabrics, shorts, and T-shirts. Since daytime temperatures can exceed +35°C, a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen with high SPF are essential. However, don't forget the city's mountain location: even during the hottest period, evenings can be cool, so a light sweater or cardigan in your suitcase won't go amiss.

A winter trip to Morocco will require a completely different set of items. From December to February, you'll need a warm jacket, a thick sweater, and waterproof footwear in Khenifra, as this is the rainy season. If you plan to hike the surrounding slopes of the Atlas, be sure to bring professional trekking boots.

In spring and autumn, the layering principle works best. A combination of T-shirts, shirts, and a windbreaker will allow you to easily adjust to the changing weather throughout the day. Additionally, a compact umbrella or raincoat is a useful accessory year-round, and for those who enjoy long walks, a thermos to enjoy famous Moroccan tea in the fresh air is a great addition.
