What to Do

The main reason people come here is for the live concerts. Within these walls, you can hear everything from classic jazz standards to radical improvisation. The unique layout of the hall allows spectators not just to watch the performance, but literally to be inside the process, walking around the stage and seeing every movement of the musicians' hands.

In addition to official performances, famous jam sessions are regularly held here. These are moments of true magic, where professionals and talented amateurs unite for spontaneous creativity. If you play an instrument yourself, you have the chance to take part in improvisation masterclasses or workshops that have been held here for decades.

Don't forget to stop by the Bimhuis bar. It is open during concerts, and access is organized so as not to interfere with listening to the music. Enjoying the view of the evening city through panoramic windows with a glass of your favorite drink is a separate pleasure that complements the evening's cultural program.

Getting There

Getting to this musical center is very easy, as it is located within walking distance of the city's main transport hub. If you are at Amsterdam Centraal Station, a walk along the banks of the IJ river will take about 15–20 minutes. This is a great way to enjoy the modern views of the city before the concert begins.

For those who prefer public transport, tram No. 26 (running towards IJburg) to the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ stop is ideal. You can also take trams No. 12 or 14. From the stop to the club entrance is just a couple of minutes at a leisurely pace.

If you are traveling by metro, get off at Centraal Station (blue Noord/Zuidlijn line) and then transfer to a tram or walk. For cycling enthusiasts, convenient bike parking is provided right by the building. A taxi ride from the city center will take no more than 10 minutes, but keep in mind that car parking in this area is very limited, so it is better to use the Muziekgebouw underground garage.

History & Facts

The history of this venue began in 1973, thanks to the initiative of the musicians themselves — Hans Dulfer, Willem Breuker, and their colleagues from the BIM association. The official opening took place on October 1, 1974, in a very unusual space — a former furniture store. From the very beginning, the club became a stronghold of free jazz and improvisation, challenging the traditional musical forms of the time.

Over the decades of its existence, the venue has become a legend. Titans such as Charles Mingus and Archie Shepp have performed on its stage. In 1984, the halls underwent a major renovation, turning into amphitheaters with flawless acoustics, which allowed for high-quality live recordings that are highly valued by collectors around the world today.

A new chapter in the club's history opened in 2005 when the venue moved to the futuristic complex on the waterfront. Despite the change of scenery, the designers managed to preserve the same intimate atmosphere of the old underground club that jazz musicians loved so much. In 2024, the venue celebrated its 50th anniversary in style, confirming its status as the country's primary jazz "heart."

Time Needed

When planning a visit for a concert, it is best to set aside 3 to 5 hours. This is plenty of time to arrive a little early, get a comfortable seat, enjoy a two-hour performance, and spend some time at the bar after the show discussing your impressions with like-minded people.

If you decide to attend one of the free jam sessions or masterclasses, your visit could last the entire evening — about 4–6 hours. An evening at Bimhuis is not about rushing, but about complete immersion in the flow of live sound.
