What to Do

The main event here is undoubtedly the flight on five high-speed ziplines. Each line has its own character: for example, the Rakanui Rocket is impressive in scale, while Ki Uta Ki Tai offers those famous "mountains to sea" panoramas. For those who enjoy a bit of competition, double cables allow you to fly side-by-side with a friend or partner. The final descent, Kārearea, will get your heart racing as you reach speeds of up to 70 km/h.

Your adventure begins with a ride in the legendary Unimog 4x4 truck. The route winds through the rugged terrain of Rakanui Station, past grazing livestock, through river fords, and thick scrub. This is a great opportunity to see hidden corners of the New Zealand backcountry and admire cascading waterfalls right from the cab of the off-road vehicle.

Between flights, a light nature walk awaits you along trails through the regenerating forest. Experienced guides will tell you about the region's biodiversity, and if you visit during the right season, you might even be able to take part in tree planting. From the platforms, which reach heights of up to 103 meters, you might even spot whales or dolphins in the ocean waters on a clear day—so remember to look down as well as forward!

Getting There

The adventure begins in the very heart of the town at the EcoZip base office. This is very convenient for travelers, as the headquarters is within walking distance of many hotels and cafes. From here, a 15-minute transfer is provided by a dedicated shuttle to the gearing-up site located just south of the town.

If you are traveling to the town of Kaikoura independently, it is easiest to arrive by car via the scenic State Highway 1. Regular buses operated by InterCity or Naked Bus also run between cities. The nearest major international airport is in Christchurch, which is approximately a 2-hour drive away.

For those already in town, a taxi ride to the central office on West End takes just a few minutes. After check-in and a safety briefing, you'll enjoy an exciting ride in a powerful Unimog 4x4 across the Kahutara River directly to the start of the course at Rakanui Station.

History & Facts

Although EcoZip Adventures Kaikoura is a relatively new addition to the South Island's tourism map, it has already become an iconic destination. The project was designed to showcase the region's incredible beauty from unique perspectives while maintaining a deep connection to the local nature and culture.

The zipline courses are set on the grounds of Rakanui Station, a 3,000-acre working farm with a rich history. Here, rolling valleys meet ancient forests and waterfalls. One of the project's primary missions is the restoration of native forest on land previously used for grazing, making every flight a contribution to the environment.

The cultural aspect of the attraction is highlighted by the names of the lines, which were chosen in collaboration with the local Māori communities of Ngāti Kurī and Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura. For instance, the name of the line Ki Uta Ki Tai translates to "from the mountains to the sea," perfectly describing the panorama revealed to visitors. Another descent, Kārearea, is named after the New Zealand falcon, symbolizing speed and the freedom of flight.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the EcoZip Adventures experience, you should set aside about 3.5 hours in your schedule. This time includes check-in, the transfer from the town center, the thrilling Unimog 4x4 ride to the top of the hills, and, of course, completing all five zipline courses.

The organizers strongly recommend arriving at the base camp 15–30 minutes before your scheduled start time. This buffer is necessary for the safety briefing and equipment fitting. Given the total duration of the tour, it’s an excellent half-day activity that leaves plenty of time to explore other attractions along the coast.

Working Hours

The EcoZip Adventures Kaikoura complex is open to adventurers daily, including weekends. Standard operating hours are from 08:30 to 17:30. However, please keep in mind that tours run on a schedule and last several hours, so pre-booking your spot in a group is mandatory.

Note that the operating schedule may change slightly depending on the season or weather conditions. Technical breaks may also occur on certain days of the year, so it is recommended to check the company's official website for the current schedule on your chosen date before planning your trip.
