The complex is a harmonious blend of three buildings from different eras, including a 1936 Art Deco structure and a modern wing added during a major 2013 renovation. Here, in New Zealand, precious Māori artifacts (taonga), works by national artists, and documents chronicling the region's social history are carefully preserved.

A special place in the exhibition is dedicated to materials about the region's recovery from past tragic events, making MTG Hawke's Bay an essential stop for anyone interested in the history and culture of Hawke's Bay. Admission to the main museum galleries is traditionally free for all visitors.

What to Do

A rich program awaits guests within the walls of MTG Hawke's Bay. Be sure to visit the Taonga Māori gallery, which displays unique indigenous artifacts of immense cultural and spiritual value. Equally impressive is the underground exhibition dedicated to the 1931 earthquake: it literally transports you back in time to feel how the city rose from the ruins.

Art lovers will enjoy the fine arts galleries, featuring works by famous New Zealand masters like Rita Angus. Permanent exhibitions are complemented by temporary ones focused on contemporary culture, design, and natural history. With 15 exhibition halls in total, there is certainly no room for boredom.

Besides browsing museum items, it's worth checking out the Century Theatre. This cozy venue regularly hosts film screenings, live music concerts, and theatrical performances. After your cultural immersion, you can browse the library or pick out original gifts and local handicrafts at the museum gift shop.

Getting There

Getting to the cultural center is very easy, as it is located in the heart of Napier at 1 Tennyson Street. If you are already strolling along the famous Marine Parade or exploring the Art Deco quarters, the museum building is just a couple of minutes' walk away.

For those arriving from other areas, it's convenient to use the city buses, with stops located in the immediate vicinity of the entrance. A taxi or rideshare from Hawke's Bay Airport will take about 15–20 minutes. If you are traveling by rental car, you can leave it in nearby municipal parking lots or paid street parking along the city streets.

History & Facts

The history of this site began back in 1865 when an athenaeum was opened—a community center for the cultural and educational development of the Hawke's Bay community. It housed a philosophical institute that made a huge contribution to the study of the region's art and natural sciences through the work of prominent researchers of the time.

A key moment in the museum's fate was the devastating 1931 earthquake. Although many collections were damaged, the building itself stood firm, highlighting the need for a specialized safe storage facility. The modern Art Deco building, designed by architect James Augustus Louis Hay, was opened in 1936 using funds raised by local residents.

Over the decades, the complex has continuously expanded: the Century theater was added in 1977 for the city's centenary, and a major renovation took place between 2010 and 2013. As a result, the project merged historical heritage with modern architecture, winning several prestigious national awards. Today, MTG Hawke's Bay remains the primary guardian of the region's cultural code.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the main exhibits, study the Māori treasures, and learn about the earthquake history, most visitors need about 2–3 hours. This is plenty of time to look into all 15 exhibition halls and visit the art gallery.

If you plan to attend a film screening or a theater production at the Century Theatre, or if you are traveling with children who will enjoy the interactive zones, it's better to allow up to 4 hours. Given its central location, a trip to the museum can easily be combined with lunch at one of the nearby waterfront cafes.

Working Hours

The museum maintains a very convenient schedule, welcoming guests daily. This makes it easy to fit a visit to the cultural center into any itinerary, whether on a weekday or weekend.

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission to the main galleries is free; however, keep in mind that certain special events in the theater or exclusive temporary exhibitions may require a ticket purchase.
