What to Do

Every step through the village reveals something new and interesting: here you can see a real steam train, a vintage tugboat, and a fragment of the legendary "Endeavour," the ship sailed by Captain Cook. Architectural gems like the old post office, the village hotel, and an elegant music rotunda provide the perfect backdrop for retro-style photos.

Art enthusiasts will love the numerous art galleries and studios. Visitors can watch local artisans at work, pick up unique souvenirs in craft shops, or attend one of the many festivals and concerts regularly held in the village's open spaces.

If you're looking for peace and quiet, take a stroll through the scenic gardens surrounded by native bush. Its proximity to the Kopurererua Valley makes it an excellent starting point for easy walks, allowing you to combine local history with outdoor relaxation.

Getting There

Located in the southern part of the city, this cultural site is at the very end of 17th Avenue West. If your journey to New Zealand involves a rental car, the drive from Rotorua takes about an hour (62 km), while the trip from Auckland takes roughly 2.5 hours (209 km).

From central Tauranga, the easiest way to reach the village is by taxi or private vehicle, which takes just a few minutes. You can also use city bus routes that stop near the entrance. The area is surrounded by native bush and is adjacent to the scenic Kopurererua Valley, which features various walking trails.

History & Facts

The idea for this open-air museum first emerged in December 1972. The chosen site was originally covered in thick scrub and required significant preparation: before New Zealand gained this new attraction, workers had to carry out extensive drainage and clearing, which began in January 1973.

The complex officially opened on December 11, 1976. Since then, the village has continuously evolved, adding original buildings and faithful replicas. It hasn't been without challenges: in August 1981, a devastating fire destroyed three structures, including the stables and a garage, but the project survived and continued to grow.

In 1989, management was taken over by the Compass Community Trust, which transformed the village into an active community center. Today, the Tauranga City Council is responsible for preserving this heritage, turning it into a key landmark on the region's cultural map.

Time Needed

A standard tour of the grounds—walking through the cobbled streets, viewing the building facades, and taking photos in the gardens—usually takes about 2–3 hours. This is the ideal amount of time for those who want to soak up the atmosphere as part of a city tour.

If you plan to visit every art gallery, browse the craft shops, or attend a cultural event, you should set aside 4–5 hours. A leisurely stroll followed by a cup of coffee at a local cafe will allow you to fully experience the charm of the "past century" without rushing.

Working Hours

The village grounds are open to visitors daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This is the main window when you can freely walk the streets and view the outdoor exhibits. However, it's worth noting that access to the park itself may be available from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM.

As for the commercial establishments, retail shops are generally open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The main administration office is open on weekdays until 3:00 PM and is closed on public holidays.
