The museum's collection features more than 26 aircraft, including legendary models such as the Spitfire and North American Harvard. Amazingly, most of the exhibits (around 70%) are still in working condition and capable of flying, making this one of the most significant aviation centers in New Zealand.

In addition to the vast hangars filled with machinery, there is a themed cafe called Avgas, where you can relax after the tour, as well as a modern conference center. The museum is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of civil and military aviation, offering guests a deep dive into the atmosphere of the golden age of flight.

What to Do

At this museum, visitors are offered much more than just viewing exhibits behind a fence. You can explore more than 5,000 different items in detail: from vintage engines to the personal belongings of famous pilots. One of the most popular zones is the interactive cockpits, where you can climb inside to feel what it's like behind the controls of a real airplane.

For those who dream of the sky, there are flight simulators that allow you to test your piloting skills in a safe environment. If a virtual flight isn't enough, the museum organizes real scenic flights in restored historic aircraft. For example, you can take to the air in an open-cockpit Boeing Stearman biplane from the World War II era or enjoy a silent flight in a glider.

While walking through the hangars, you are likely to meet restoration masters at work — the museum openly demonstrates the process of restoring old machinery. A visit should conclude with a trip to the gift shop for unique memorabilia and a lunch at the Avgas cafe, which is fully designed in an aviation style.

Getting There

Getting to the aviation museum is easy, as it is located at 9 Jean Batten Drive in the Mount Maunganui area. The facility is situated right next to the Tauranga airport, literally a few minutes' walk from the main terminal entrance.

If you are traveling from the city center, it is most convenient to use a taxi or drive a rental car. The journey through the scenic Bay of Plenty region takes about 10–15 minutes. For those driving, ample parking spaces are provided on the museum grounds.

For travelers arriving in the region by plane, the museum serves as an ideal first stop on their itinerary. The exact geographical coordinates for navigation systems are: -37.6677395, 176.1977145. Despite the lack of a direct metro line, its proximity to a major transport hub makes the location highly accessible.

History & Facts

The story of this place began in 2000, when a group of local enthusiasts and businessmen decided to preserve the aviation heritage that New Zealand is so proud of. Initially, there were plans to restore an old hangar from the middle of the last century, but due to its poor condition, the decision was made to create a modern building from scratch.

The complex officially opened on May 28, 2005, accompanied by an impressive airshow featuring historic aircraft. From the very beginning, the museum's creators aimed to make it "alive": about 70% of the displayed machinery is in airworthy condition and regularly takes to the skies.

In 2012, the museum expanded with the opening of the new Legacy Jet Centre, which allowed for the restoration and storage of even more complex aircraft. Today, the exhibition occupies three spacious hangars, housing not only planes but also extensive archives dedicated to the development of civil and military aviation in the region.

The facility is managed by the Bay of Plenty Classic Aircraft Trust, a charitable organization. Thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the support of patrons, the museum constantly adds rare specimens to its collection, evolving from a simple storage facility into a full-fledged educational and cultural center.

Time Needed

To leisurely browse through all the hangars, study the aircraft designs, and read interesting facts from aviation history, it usually takes about 2–3 hours. This is quite enough time to get acquainted with the main exhibition and visit the souvenir shop.

If you plan not only to walk through the halls but also to test yourself on flight simulators or book a scenic flight in one of the vintage biplanes, you should set aside at least half a day for the visit. Also, don't forget to leave time for a break in the themed cafe, where you can have a snack surrounded by aviation artifacts.

Working Hours

The museum is open to visitors daily, offering convenient times for a visit both on weekdays and weekends. Please note that on Fridays, the complex stays open longer than usual, allowing you to plan an evening tour of the exhibition.
