History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the founding of the region. In 1841, explorer and surveyor Frederic Carrington chose this particular stretch of coast to establish the settlement of New Plymouth. Despite the lack of a natural sheltered harbor, he was drawn by the prospect of developing this territory.

An important milestone was 1881, when the first breakwater was laid. It formed the foundation of the future Port Taranaki, which played a key role in goods export and the city's economic growth. Interestingly, it was right here in 1865 that New Zealand's first oil field was discovered—oily patches on the Ngamotu sand gave away the hidden riches of the earth.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the beach finally established its status as the city's main recreation spot. Back then, cozy tea rooms and skating rinks operated here, and lively carnivals were regularly held. After World War II, entertainment traditions were revived: a miniature railway and golf courses appeared on the beach, turning it into a true center for family leisure.

Time Needed

For a quick look and a short walk along the water's edge, 1–2 hours will be quite enough. This is sufficient time to take beautiful photos and enjoy the sea air.

However, if your plans include swimming, a picnic, or walking a section of the Coastal Walkway, you should budget for half a day (about 4–5 hours). You can linger here especially long on Sundays when the local market is open, offering unique goods and treats.

Working Hours

Since Ngamotu Beach is a public natural site, access to it is open 24 hours a day throughout the year. You can come here at dawn for a run or at sunset for a romantic walk.

If you plan to visit the popular Seaside Market, keep its schedule in mind: it operates on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. During the summer period, the market is open from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and in winter—from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Before visiting specific events or cafes on the waterfront, it is recommended to check information on official city resources.
