About

This establishment in New Zealand is famous for its unique retro atmosphere and its principled absence of gaming machines or giant sports screens. Here, everything is dedicated to art: from the dim lighting to the acoustic design. It is a space where music sounds honest and open, creating a safe and comfortable environment for people of all ages.

The club's owner, Ivan Muir, has created more than just a business—he has built an entire community. The name Nivara is a unique word coined by the creator that has become synonymous with quality jazz, blues, and independent artist performances. The club is rightfully considered a cultural hub, where every evening turns into a small musical discovery.

What to Do

The main reason to head down to the basement on Victoria Street is the honest sound. Here, you can enjoy live performances in the genres of jazz, blues, and indie rock. Visitors appreciate the chance to see both local performers and well-known masters of their craft in an intimate, almost homey setting. It is the perfect place to discover new artists who might be followed by the whole world tomorrow.

The retro-style interior invites quiet relaxation and contemplation. The club often hosts not just concerts, but also cultural events, folk nights, and creative meetups. Special attention is given to young musicians: until 10:00 PM, the venue is open to those accompanied by parents, allowing the younger generation to experience real musical culture.

The lack of distractions, such as TVs or slot machines, allows you to fully focus on socializing and art. You can order drinks at the bar, take a seat at a small table, and just watch the magic of live performance. Nivara Lounge is a place where the audience and musicians become one for the night.

Getting There

Finding this iconic venue is easy, as it is located right in the city center at 266 Victoria Street. If you are already exploring the central streets, the club is an easy walk from most city hotels and shopping centers. Look for the sign at street level, then head down the stairs into the cozy basement.

For those who prefer public transport, many city buses passing through central Hamilton stop nearby. You can also always use taxis or popular ride-sharing services, which will get you directly to the doors on Victoria Street in just a few minutes from anywhere in the city center.

If you plan to arrive by private or rental car, look for street parking in the surrounding area. However, keep in mind that in the evening, especially on popular concert nights, parking spots can be scarce, so it is better to arrive a bit early.

History & Facts

The history of this place began long before the official opening of Nivara Lounge in 2014. Back in 1997, Ivan Muir leased this basement space—formerly a restaurant and billiards hall—to create a venue called Jazz Blues Concept (JBC). This is where future stars took their first steps on stage, including the famous singer Kimbra, who performed here at the age of seven.

In the early 2000s, the venue went through difficult times and changes in ownership, temporarily losing its unique musical focus. However, in 2012, Muir returned to revive the legendary live sound atmosphere. After a two-year battle for a license allowing young people under 22 to enter the club until 10:00 PM, the project relaunched under its new name.

The name Nivara itself is a creative acronym created by the owner from the letters of his loved ones' names and his own. Today, the club is considered the "heart" of the Waikato region's music scene. Unfortunately, the building's history is coming to an end: it is expected to be demolished in 2027 to make way for new hotels, so now is the best time to experience this legend.

Time Needed

When planning your evening at Nivara Lounge, use the length of the musical program as a guide. Usually, a standard performance or concert lasts between 1 and 3 hours. This is plenty of time to enjoy the quality sound, chat with friends, and soak in the venue's retro atmosphere.

Many visitors prefer to arrive half an hour before the live music starts to grab comfortable seats and order drinks. Since the venue is specifically focused on listening to music, time flies by unnoticed, especially if there are several performers or bands on the program.

Working Hours

The club's doors are usually open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday. Standard operating hours are from 5:00 PM to 12:00 AM, which is perfect for an evening wind-down after exploring the city. The venue is typically closed on Mondays and Sundays.

The schedule may change depending on special concerts or private events. We strongly recommend checking the current program on the club's official website or social media before visiting to ensure you catch the performance you are interested in.
