What to Do

The main draw for visitors is the chance to play a full round on the championship course, which offers a challenge for both beginners and professionals. Guests can enjoy a modern fleet of motorized golf carts, professional club rentals, and a well-stocked pro shop with all the necessary gear.

Even if you don't plan on playing, the clubhouse features a cafe and bar open seven days a week. It's the perfect spot to enjoy lunch with a view of The Remarkables and the lake. On Fridays, the club hosts traditional "Fish and Chips" nights, which are highly popular with both locals and tourists.

The area surrounding the club also offers plenty of leisure options: public walking and cycling trails wind along the peninsula. Here, you can discover unusual lakeside sculptures, find secluded beaches, or simply watch the boats gliding across the water.

Getting There

This scenic sports facility is located at the very end of the Kelvin Heights peninsula, about 14 kilometers from the city center. The drive along Peninsula Road usually takes 15 to 20 minutes, offering breathtaking views of the lake and mountain ranges along the way.

For those who prefer not to drive, a taxi from the city center is an excellent option. The club has ample parking for visitors and features a well-developed road infrastructure, making the trip as comfortable as possible at any time of year.

History & Facts

The history of this location began on November 26, 1914, when a meeting at the Lakes District Council office resulted in the decision to found the club, then known as the Wakatipu Golf Club. The official opening took place in the spring of 1915, and the first membership fee for men was just 7 shillings and 6 pence.

Throughout its existence, the club has occupied four different locations. Initially, the course was located along the lakeshore in the Frankton area, then on the land where the city's airport now stands, followed by a 9-hole course before finally settling on the peninsula.

The modern course on the Kelvin Heights peninsula was officially opened on April 19, 1975. Its development was made possible by the efforts of Hilton Hensman and John Grant, as well as significant financial support from local banks and private donations from the community.

Time Needed

For a full 18-hole round of golf, experienced players and guests are recommended to set aside 4 to 5 hours. This time includes not only the game itself but also preparation and the chance to relax and enjoy the atmosphere in the clubhouse after the match.

If your schedule is tighter, you can opt for a shorter 9-hole round, which takes approximately 2–3 hours. In any case, it's worth leaving a bit of extra time to enjoy a coffee while overlooking Lake Wakatipu.

Working Hours

Queenstown Golf Club welcomes guests daily from 08:00 to 17:30. The cafe and bar are also open seven days a week, allowing you to enjoy a break at any time during the day.

As the course is very popular, visitors are strongly encouraged to book tee times in advance. For up-to-date information on potential schedule changes or private tournaments, it is worth visiting the club's official website.
