What to Do

There is something for everyone in this park. Start your walk with a visit to the themed gardens: in spring, the cherry blossoms are particularly stunning, and in the rose garden, you can enjoy the delicate scent of hundreds of blooms. Be sure to stop by the Winter Garden to see exotic tropical plants, and don't miss the Japanese garden—a perfect place for meditation and contemplation.

Families with children should head to the bird aviaries, home to playful kea and kaka, or the enclosures with friendly alpacas, wallabies, and fluffy rabbits. One of the main attractions is the Tuatarium, home to the famous Henry—an ancient tuatara reptile whose species has existed since the time of the dinosaurs. For little explorers, the park features the fairytale-like Wonderland Castle with plenty of slides.

Active travelers will appreciate the 18-hole golf course, disc golf areas, and a modern 4-kilometer fitness track with exercise stations. Every Saturday, the park hosts traditional parkrun events that bring locals together. After an eventful day, you can enjoy a picnic on one of the green lawns or grab a cup of coffee at the cozy Cheeky Llama cafe.

History & Facts

The history of Queens Park began almost simultaneously with the city's founding in 1856. At that time, the park was envisioned as an orderly oasis where nature was "tamed" for the comfort of townspeople. The thoughtful 1912 layout, with its radial paths and central avenues, remains to this day, echoing Victorian traditions of park design.

A landmark feature of the park is the Feldwick Gates, erected in 1924. They were built using funds bequeathed by John Feldwick and have since served as the grand entrance, highlighting the site's significance. Over time, the area has been enriched with new features: the Southland Astronomical Society observatory, memorials, and the Avenue of Honour.

The preservation of unique species holds a special place in the park's history. In 2024, a new modern habitat for ancient tuatara reptiles, Te Moutere (Tuatara Island), was opened. It is home to the famous Henry, whose age spans decades, linking the modern park with the era of dinosaurs, of which his species is a contemporary.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the main gardens, visit the animal enclosures, and check out the Tuatarium, you usually need 2 to 4 hours. This is enough time for an introductory walk and a short break at the cafe.

If you plan to have a full family picnic, play golf, or spend time at the numerous playgrounds, it's worth setting aside half a day (about 4–6 hours). Queens Park is so vast and varied that it’s easy to spend an entire day here, constantly discovering new interesting spots.

Working Hours

Queens Park is open to visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This makes it accessible for both early morning runs at dawn and quiet evening strolls under the starry sky.

However, please note that individual facilities within the park, such as the animal aviaries, specialized pavilions, or the Cheeky Llama cafe, have their own operating hours, which are typically limited to daylight hours.
